When you think of Sicilian red wine, do you imagine something big, bold and powerful? This week’s selection from COS offers a deliciously different perspective.
From the southeastern corner of Sicily, near the historic town of Vittoria, comes Cerasuolo di Vittoria, the island’s only DOCG wine, Italy’s highest tier of controlled wine classification.
The name Cerasuolo refers to the wine’s beautiful cherry-red color. And its distinctive character comes from two indigenous Sicilian grapes: 60% Nero d’Avola and 40% Frappato.
Nero d’Avola contributes depth, dark fruit and structure, while Frappato brings fragrant red berries, floral aromas and refreshing acidity. Together, they create a wine with richness but without heaviness.
What makes COS special?
COS is a pioneering Sicilian winery dedicated to organic farming and expressing the character of its native grapes and vineyards.
The vines grow in the red, sandy, limestone-rich soils of Vittoria, about 750 feet above sea level. The grapes ferment naturally with indigenous yeasts, the yeasts present on the grapes and in the winery, before aging in large Slavonian oak casks and bottle. This approach allows the wine’s fruit and distinctive character to take center stage.
What’s in the glass?
Expect wild cherry, raspberry, dark berries, rose petals and a hint of savory herbs and spice. The wine is medium-bodied, with lively acidity, silky tannins and a long, satisfying finish.
It’s wonderfully versatile at the table. Think eggplant Parmesan, pasta with tomato sauce, mushroom risotto, roast chicken, grilled vegetables or Sicilian caponata.
And while it’s delicious now, this is a wine with enough structure and freshness to develop further in the bottle.
