Se trata de una masa elaborada, entre otros ingredientes, con manteca de cerdo, canela, cacao en polvo y Marsala. Después se refina, estira y corta para colocar sobre unos cilindros metálicos. Se fríen y se rellenan con una crema de ricotta. finalmente los decoramos al gusto y disfrutamos al máximo.
Parece ser que la receta de los Cannoli Sicilianos provienen de tiempos de la dominación árabe en Sicilia (827-1091) nacido en manos de monjas en un convento cerca de Caltanissetta. Lugar desde donde se extendió al resto de de la isla y, más adelante, al resto de Italia.
En su origen, se elaboraba para Carnaval e incluso se solían regalar como símbolo de fertilidad.
