From Milan to Verona to Venice, our days were measured in thousands of steps, litres of water consumed in the relentless summer heat, and of course, the promise of what we would eat next.
Fresh mozzarella and tomatoes were a daily ritual. Prosciutto found its way onto nearly every plate. Mornings began with fruit, while salads were added to lunches and dinners to strike a balance with the pizza, pasta, and seafood that rounded out our plates. But most importantly, we happily devoted ourselves to the most essential food group of all: gelato. 🍦
In Italy, gelato is less a dessert and more a way of marking the moment. A scoop in hand while wandering ancient cobblestone streets, escaping the afternoon heat, pausing before dinner, or simply because we came across another gelateria and couldn’t resist. Gelato time, it turns out, is anytime; and that was part of the experience.
And somehow, even while trying to pack in as much sightseeing as possible into a handful of days, it was impossible not to slow down and savour each bite. When your view is the commanding Duomo in Milan, the quiet waterfront of Bardolino, or the glow of Venice’s canals on a Saturday evening, every meal felt like a reminder that the sweetest moments are the ones we don’t rush.
Travel offers a reminder that food is about more than nutrients alone. Sometimes, food is as much about the experience as it is about what’s on the plate. ✨
