Please share with me if you have been to this awesome winery. I took huge numbers of pictures during the trip there last year. These were taken the day we did a tour of the winery. We went into this barrel cave and then into another that was rather beneath it.
The History of this place was amazing. These caves were carved out of the bedrock way back in the 1300’s! If I understood the story correctly Ricci is the word for Hedgehog. The first lower cave was carved by someone, kind of a hermit? He lived in the cave and yes – likely made wine too. He gained a reputation for the ability to predict the next day’s weather. Declared a heretic, or witch / warlock – he was brought before the Priest.
They demanded to know how he was able to predict the weather. He claimed that he “watched the behavior of the hedgehogs.” If they were agitated, they knew it was going to rain and were extra active preparing for rain. The Priest realized that this information could be helpful for their causes and saved him from being killed. He was the “Ricci of Ricci’s” and the name stuck. It is the name of the winery ever since.
Back to the huge painting. It is 48 x 60 inches and being created using mixed media techniques. Now finally getting to Oil paint. If you would are a wine lover, have been to the winery or would like this above your fireplace or in your winery – I would accept a deposit to reserve it for you.
