Our Homemade Deep Dish Pizza Recipe has a rich buttery, crunchy crust and it’s loaded with cheese, your favorite pizza toppings – I’m using Italian sausage, mushrooms and spinach, plus zesty tomatoes and fresh parmesan – and cooking it in a 12 inch cast iron skillet.

This homemade dough is easy to make, and with an initial rise that only takes 60 minutes, then two quick 15 minute rests once we transfer it into the pan.

Homemade Deep Dish Pizza recipe ingredients
3 ¾ cup of flour
¼ cup cornstarch
3 tablespoons cornmeal
1 ¾ tsp salt
2 ¾ tsp instant yeast (you’ll need two packets)
1 cup + 2 tablespoons lukewarm water (110 degrees)
2 tablespoons avocado or olive oil
6 tablespoons melted butter

Homemade Deep Dish Pizza Recipe Directions
You can make this in a stand mixer, bread machine or by hand. Blend all ingredients on low speed. Then mix on medium, kneading the dough until it is shiny and smooth, and pulls away from the sides of the bowl. This will take about 5 – 6 minutes.

Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover and let this homemade deep dish pizza dough rise for about 60 minutes. It’s a little cool here today, so I’ve heated my oven just to 250 degrees then turned it off and now I’ll pop the bowl in so it can rise in the warm oven.

I’m using a 12 inch cast iron skillet to make this homemade deep dish pizza, you can also make this in a cake pan or springform pan. Coat the bottom and sizes thoroughly with butter. Stretch out the dough, and oiling the surface to help it more easily lift off. You can also use parchment paper or a cutting board. Roll or press the dough into about a 14 inch circle. Transfer it into the skillet or pan, pressing it across the bottom into an even thickness, and up the sides. Trim off the extra dough, cover it, and let rest for about 15 minutes. Start preheating the oven to 425 degrees.

While the dough is rising, we’ll start making the pizza sauce… which today we’re going to be using whole tomatoes that are drained really well, and squeezing out the extra liquid. And I’m adding another can of tomatoes, because this didn’t look like enough to cover the pizza. While this drains some more, we’ll work on the dough.

Check the dough, and stretching it and making sure you have even coverage across the bottom and the sides. Let it rest for about 15 minutes.

After the 2 15 minute rests, pop the crust into the oven, and let it bake for about 10 minutes until it’s just barely beginning to brown. If the bottom puffs up, prick it with a fork and gently push it down.

While it’s rising, it’s time to get the filling together.
Homemade Deep Dish Pizza Recipe Filling Ingredients
2 28 oz cans whole tomatoes
1/2 lb Italian sausage
2 cups mushrooms, chopped
1 bag fresh spinach
– or your favorite toppings –

While it’s resting, finish the sauce. Add ¼ tsp of garlic powder to the tomatoes, 1 tsp of italian seasonings, you can use more if you like, and I’m adding ½ tsp of salt. And that’s it for the sauce.

Grate the mozzarella cheese, we’ll need about 4 oz to cover the bottom of this size pan. And grate about 1 cup of parmesan cheese.

Now it’s time to build the pizza in the cast iron skillet! Top the bottom with a layer of mozzarella cheese…. Then add the filling, here’s the spinach, mushroom, hot italian sausage. Then the layer of tomatoes with pizza seasoning…. And finish with parmesan cheese! Bake this for about 25 minutes, until the filling is bubbly and the top is golden brown. As soon as you remove the pizza from the oven, use two spatulas to lift the pizza out of the pan and onto a rack to cool. This keeps the bottom nice and crunchy! Let this pizza rest for about 15 minutes.. .it will still be hot on the inside.

This is one of my favorite cast iron skillet recipes! It makes a crunchy crust that cooks completely on the bottom and sides.

Thank you so much for watching and I’ll see you in the next video!
