This grandma, known as Pasta Machine, is considered the queen of pasta in New York City. Despite being 83 years old, for over half a century Nonna Dora has only used her hands to shape pasta like a work of art. In the 1970s, Nonna Dora left Italy and moved to New York with her son. But despite the distance from her beloved land, Puglia, this sweet grandma had an idea to shorten the distances: bringing her tradition with her, handmaking the typical pasta of her country. Her specialties are: orecchiette, gnocchi and malloreddus. Handmade pasta is a family tradition. Nonna Dora spends her days at her son’s restaurant “I Trulli” to give customers the opportunity to always eat fresh pasta. But behind her passion there’s a more important mission: to pass on the beauty of her increasingly rare craft to future generations. Today, Nonna Dora is a symbol inside her restaurant. Through social media, she has become a real celebrity. Many tourists and non-tourists come to her restaurant to admire her talent and are amazed at her speed of making pasta. When they ask her why she continues to make pasta by hand and not with machines, Nonna Dora replies: “I tell young people that it’s nice to cherish old traditions: grandparents and the whole family”.
