If you watched Insecure, you already know how important Prosecco was to that show — but the story behind it is just as personal as the show itself. In 2015, Issa Rae had a pivotal sushi dinner with Insecure pilot director Melina Matsoukas, who ordered a glass of Prosecco. That one moment sparked a love affair with the drink that would go on to define both her character and her real life. When fans started telling her that the show inspired them to try Prosecco, Issa decided that if people were going to drink it because of her, it should actually come from her. That is where Viarae was born. In partnership with E. & J. Gallo Winery, Issa launched Viarae in October 2023 — a line of Prosecco built around approachable luxury, Black representation in the wine industry, and the kind of wine that works just as well in a cocktail as it does in a glass. The catalog currently includes two wines — the original Viarae Prosecco DOC and the newer Viarae Prosecco Rosé DOC — both produced in the Veneto region of Northern Italy and priced at around nineteen dollars a bottle. This is the story behind the bottle.
