Join me, a Canadian, as I explore the United Kingdom… just not London! In this video, I’m sharing 15 things that surprised me about British culture, from the “sticky icky” mud to the mystery of separate hot and cold water taps.
We’re heading to Nottingham to visit an ancient cave pub (Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem), navigating British train etiquette, and experiencing the strict rules of a Sunday Roast. I also dive into the world of British TV, including my obsession with Gogglebox, and fulfill a lifelong dream of riding on the top deck of a double-decker bus in Sheffield.
Whether you’re planning a trip to the UK or just love hearing about culture shock and travel observations, I hope these stories from Leicester, Bristol, and the misty Peak District bring a bit of “cheer” to your day.

Very good. Very different.
Taps, put the plug in and run both taps until just right.. Don't you have holly in Canada. Makes a change for someone to visit U. K. Without going to London as a site more to see outside the city.
If she was in first class on the train, food and drinks are free.
As a Sheffielder I'm glad you enjoyed our humble city and double decker buses
‘Torronno’ looks cold.😂
Pronounced‘Notting-um.’ 🎉
Martina, did you and your partner at one time have a teaching ESL in South Korea themed You Tube channel?
I share in your delight and misery at having visited Mr Darcy's manor without knowing it was the Darcy manor!!!
One word. Wellies.
I hate to break this to you, but with your sense of humour you’re actually British and not Canadian 😂
You need a decent pair of Wellies.
8:24 I get Canadian sinks don't come with plugs
10:30 mock the week is best, and its back with new shows on TV on TLC channel.
Hot and cold water thing, there are separate taps as "cold" water was always safe to drink, but the hot water system historically had an open header tank into which various things may drown and die! So it makes sense. and continues, although this is now almost obsolete!
Martina, with the phone booth incident, you missed your chance to become a companion of the Doctor from Doctor Who. He was probably hoping to find a new companion that way, and you missed your opportunity; now you can't travel with him through space and time in the TARDIS.
Put the plug in the sink and mix the water
I can't stand Gogglebox, so I skipped over your spoof version. As for "Oldest pub in England", there are several that claim that, one of which is a couple of miles from here, The Fighting Cocks, in St.Albans. Worth a look while visiting the site of The Romans' third largest city in England.
Utterly delightful video.
Yeah… the bushes or hedges (shrubery is just a Monty Python thing) are indeed lethal – hence one of our favorite past times as young men is pushing each other into them when we least expect it.
Just some kind observations.
1. It's a roast. On Sunday it is called a Sunday roast, but on any other day its exactly the same, it's just called a roast.
2. You fill the sink by putting the plug in and fill it with water to suit your needs.
3. Real cider only comes from Herefordshire/ Gloucestershire. Cider from Somerset is a cheap imitation.
4. That 'shrubbery' is in fact a 'hedge' or when not in a garden, a hedgerow.
5. Yes, Bristol is an absolute dive.
I'm northern English. Used to our damp, drizzley winters and the colds that went with it. Lived in Slovakia, 99 – 01. -25°C winters heavy snowfall from early November to mid March. But dry cold. The cold taking all the moisture out of the air. No colds, freezing cold, but I didn't get ill. It's the damp that makes our winters horrible, not the cold, not the snow.
Put the plug in the sink. Wash your hands in the warm water in the bowl. Public bathrooms hardly ever have separate taps now. As do new built houses. But the old school persists. I mean, look at the age of those types of taps. That's 1950's. Renovations often replace them with modern. Then sell the old taps for a fat profit to architects/designers who do retro interior design for the bourgeoisie. To whom it's very au fait and, a la mode. Weird eh. Poorer people with the old s*** want the new. People with the new expensive, want the old retro.
Was cycle touring through, I can't even remember which county. Rural. Saw a bunch of guys completely redoing a thatched roof in the traditional manner. I stopped and watched for about an hour. Fascinating. I asked the guys, how much does that cost to do? £20,000 for a full roof. And it needs doing every 25 years or so.
Hot n cold water put plug in fill with hot n cold water to amount you want and use
I loveeeee your travel videos girl ❤ uggghhhhh
You found the widest country roads, well done 😂
so the plug at 8:18 hasn't been invented in Canada or Japan yet? no doubt it will make it over there eventually. If , and only If , the King agrees for this transfer of high-technology…
pretty good impression of those folk off gogglyboxes
Trogdor!!!!
still want to know who those folks Are,, " Abbey Christmas and Dan Singh" forever hearing about em around December.
"how do you live with white shoes ?" We don't. You'd got totally inappropriate footwear on ! Same if you're getting wet on top – you've got the wrong clothing on !!
With the washbasin, did you really not think that you might have to put the plug in the plughole to get a basin full of water ?!
🎵 Thatched Roof Cottage Hooouuuuusseee!!!!!!! 🎵 🐉 🔥 👩🚒 🚒 🧯 🔥
Ref the taps in the sink…. try using the plug so you don't waste water. That's what it's for 🙂
What a refreshing content for this channel! You and Dan ought to do more travel videos in Europe, I really enjoyed your sense of humour throughout. Always a delight to see you happy Martina.
Take your tourist blinkers off,its now an islamified craphole, you should have gone to birmingham, bolton for the day, youd have been on the first flight home!
