30+ year ago on a Friday afternoon after work, I fell asleep on the B train. I woke up at the end of
the line in Comey Island. I exited
and walked around. I followed the smell of the garlic in the air and went into Garguilo's for dinner.
Back then, atop the ceiling in the middle of the dining room, there was a huge wooden octopus with 8 legs stretching out across the room. Beneath it was a table for 6, very elaborately set for just two — flowers in the center, crystal water and wine glasses, and sterling silver flatware.
A dumpy man in his early 60's came in, wearing a very fine suit, with his wife, also older and dressed nice, with lots of expensive jewelry on her person. As they were seated at that table, the room, filled with about 60 people, became deadly silent, and, once they were at their seats, there was loud cheering by one and all. I asked my waiter, " Who's that?" and was told, "Oh, he's a well respected local business man.". Very well respected. I asked no further questions.
