Sperlonga is a picturesque coastal town in the Lazio region, located approximately halfway between Rome and Naples. Known for its whitewashed historic center, pristine beaches, and ancient Roman history, it is officially recognized as one of the Borghi più belli d’Italia (The most beautiful villages of Italy).
Find the ruins of Emperor Tiberius’s 1st-century AD summer residence. The site includes a massive sea cave (Grotta di Tiberio) that once served as a luxurious dining hall.
The adjacent museum houses monumental sculptures found in the cave, depicting scenes from Homer’s Odyssey.
A maze of narrow, winding alleyways, staircases, and whitewashed houses perched on a cliff overlooking the sea. It is entirely pedestrianized and filled with artisan shops, boutiques, and cafes.
Torre Truglia is a 16th-century watchtower located on the tip of the promontory. It offers panoramic views of the coastline and is a central landmark of the town.
Sperlonga has been consistently awarded the Blue Flag for its clean waters.
I also ate some of the best pizza.
