We’ve all probably had that one late-night pizza slice that was so life changing it felt like its cheesy, tomatoey goodness could solve all the world’s problems. We can’t guarantee any other pizza will be able to recapture that magical experience, but these shops will come pretty close.

  1. A native New Yorker's definition of pizza includes: (1) ultra-thin crust, (2) crisp despite the thin dough so that it doesn't droop when you pick it up; (3) nothing more than sausage or pepperoni as a topping; (4) real cheese (not soy posing as cheese); (5) multiple herbs and spices giving it flavor, so that it doesn't feel like you're merely eating a cheese sandwich. It's darned hard to find any of these requirements (much less ALL of them) outside New York. Hardly any of the pizza in North Carolina is edible. I must single out La Casetta in Scotland Neck, where the proprietor understands New York style Italian cooking. Baked ziti, spinach artichoke dip, "Nonna" soup (Italian wedding soup) are among their best dishes, but their pizza is an oasis in the desert. However, be sure to order it "crispy" or they will under-cook the crust and serve it up limp like the people of North Carolina are accustomed to eating pizza. Particular compliments to the combination of herbs and spices, which precisely nails New York taste. Again, pizza should NOT taste like a cheese sandwich!

  2. 0:46 A person that loves Pepperoni Pizza is going to rate that pizza better than they would rate a Hawaiian Pizza. Pizza should have no toppings at all to be considered The Best Pizza . If it has anything extra, it shouldn't count.

  3. From Birmingham, AL here, Post Office Pies closed their last location on 6/29/25. Scarr’s is our favorite pizza in NYC!

  4. You did Detroit dirty. So many better pies. In fact, you went NY heavy. Theres 100 places in Detroit that would wipe the floor with half the joints on this list.

  5. These pizza places definitely deserve a road trip of their own. Can’t wait to try a few of them next time I travel.

  6. I love how each pizzeria has its own story and flavor style. It’s a great reminder that great pizza can be found in every corner of the country.

  7. Uno's and California Pizza Kitchen are my favorites. Places like Pizza Hut, have declined in quality while increasing their prices.😟 But here in Philadelphia, a locally owned restaurant known as Pete's Pizza, gets my vote. Never had anything bad at Pete's.
