In this On The Road Special Edition, we visit the Josetta Saffirio winery in Monforte d’Alba, in the northern Italian region of Piedmont. The region is famous for its truffles, hazelnuts and, of course, Barolo wine.

Today our host is Sara Vezza, a fifth-generation farmer at Monforte d’Alba.

Join Sara as she takes us on a tour of the Josetta Saffirio winery explaining the history and development of the winery that today has 20 hectares of vineyard and produces over 120,000 bottles of wine a year.

Sara emphasises the importance of sustainability to the winery and takes us on a behind the scenes tour of the cellar, including the deep underground ageing room. Sara also shows us the winery’s “library” that includes the very first vintage made by her parents. Sara also explains the winery’s innovative use of amphorae and porcelain “eggs” for maturing.

Finally, Sara takes us for a stroll through the Nebbiolo vineyards where the fruit is beginning to form.
