Despite the “that’s a spicy meat-a-ball” stereotype, there are traditionally no spicy meatball recipes in Italy. In fact, spicy food is almost unheard of in traditional Italian cuisine, excepting the food of Calabria. Even Calabrians never make their meatballs spicy (sausages and salami are another story).

That doesn’t mean that the idea of a spicy meatball isn’t good, though. It sounds delicious, in fact, which is why we decided to tackle the project of trying to create the ULTIMATE spicy meatball recipe. To do this, we combined a few different techniques for spicing up polpette…

  1. This was a very enjoyable, fun vid. Thanks for sharing the meatball adventure. I cant wait to try the nduja! Love your content, keep it coming!

  2. The spicy meatball ad campaign was in 1969, You ate it, Ralph came along in 1972. I can't believe I ate the whole thing is almost as iconic.

  3. Alka-seltzer is an antacid. The "spicy" refers to the affects of the acidity of the tomato sauce on ones' stomach. Not so much the meatball.

  4. Speaking of alka seltzer, didn't this channel do a "what's in an Italian pantry?" segment one time and one of the items was Galeffi effervescent antacid powder that was drank after a big dinner to settle the stomach?

  5. Eva's family and mine would be best friends. Spice is the essence of life! My parents have always had a garden since I was little and they almost exclusively grow peppers of all varieties now: bell peppers, jalapenos, serranos, poblanos, anaheims, Thai chillies, habeneros, ghost peppers and Carolina reapers. They are wonderful in all sorts of cuisines, but the best part is the vinegar sauce they make with the peppers which I use on greens, peas or as a base for my great grandfather's barbeque sauce. Thank you both for the great recipes!

  6. I remember the commercial from when I was a kid. Before my parents got married, my dad insisted that my mom learn how to make my Nona’s meatballs. (And tomato sauce). It was essentially what Eva made. She could tell if it was right by the sound of the squish made when they were being mixed.
But she added some combination of herbs that she never told any of us. They were AMAZING! When I asked what she added, she told me something different every time. She took her secret with her. I rarely make meatballs. But I have her sauce recipe memorized.
