Don’t Buy FAKE San Marzano Tomatoes…

…At least not for the same price as the real deal.

The reason that real SM tomatoes are so cherished is because they absorb lots of flavor from the specific area of volcanic soil where they are grown. The specific name is similar to how certain wines only come from certain regions. The imitations may use the same seeds or blends, but if they are grown anywhere else, the flavor will not be the same.

Eat whatever tomatoes you enjoy, but just know what you’re buying, and don’t spend more for the name if the product isn’t even authentic.

  1. The FDA really needs to get their shit together. Loophole after loophole that allows these companies to basically just lie to consumers. Even when it's not dangerous, it's still upcharging based on obviously intended misconceptions. We shouldn't have to read the fine print like it's a damn legal document.

  2. Does this dude's face make anyone else uncomfortable? Or is it just me? I feel like he owes me money for looking at him

  3. Where the hell is San marzano tomatoes at Costco? I basically live there and have never seen them. Maybe certain states or stores?

  4. The entire concept of san marzonos is… hilarious anyway.

Tomatoes come from the Americas. Italy went "HEY those are good" and now they act like they own the fucking things. Absolute clown behavior from a entire country.

  5. It only works because Americans are too lazy to read the ingredients. Why are you surprised when they don't even flick their fingers to use the turn signals?

  6. What you want from a canned sandwich marzano tomato is the intense tomato flavour. That can come from a number of varieties. So donโ€™t fixate over San Marzano and instead buy a few varieties and try out to find your favourite

  7. considering the USDA allows a cow raised and butchered in Brazil from ranches made by cutting down Amazon rainforest, to be processed into pieces and packaged in the USA to be labeled as "made in USA", "American beef", and USDA certified, makes that fake San Marzano can child's play in terms of scams on a federal level.

  8. If people stopped acting like San Marzano tomatoes are the only tomatoes you can make good food with, this wouldn't be a problem (or at least anywhere near as much of a problem)

The truth is that San Marzano tomatoes are overhyped and basically just a fad (*fads don't mean the thing is bad*)

  9. Italian scammers are finding themselves victims of scams, given the prevalence of counterfeit and adulterated foods in the Italian food industry.

  10. Honestly any whole tomatoes in a can will make a good sauce as long as you cook and season it properly. I would only splurge on expensive authentic Marzanos for a special occasion.

  11. It's not the Italian government, it's the EU that actually regulates it, but Italy enforces it within their borders

  12. I mean who cares as long as its good tomatoes at a decent price? Obviously the farms in italy cant keep up with demand. As long as theyre still making money and operating, im good with it

  13. Whatโ€™s more wild is u have 4 different cans all the same basically to many corporations run this world u gow down a isle for said chips or sauce thereโ€™s 5 of the same chip/sauce and all the same calories etc why ? stop mass production I worked retail an holy f half of the store just goes to waste an u canโ€™t do anything abt it

  14. Genetically, there are 2 varieties of San Marzano tomatoes, and they only called San Marzano tomatoes because they are grown in the Agro Sarnese-Nocerino area. (San Marzano 2 and Krios are the variety names)
American farmers canโ€™t use the San Marzano name, but they can grow identical varieties of tomato. Tell me you are a San Marzano Tomato without telling me that youโ€™re a San Marzano Tomatoโ€ฆ.
This happens with parmigiano reggiano, an American version isnโ€™t โ€œfakeโ€ but itโ€™s certainly not authentic, and shouldnโ€™t use names protected by the D.O.P.

  15. Sad, but even those "true" San marzanos many times mix and have their own ways of deceiving. When you know the right people they close an eye. Even getting extra DOC / DOCG tags for wine. Which have some of the strictest consorzio's also have many scandals. I can't say for the rest of Europe, but in Italy I can tell you from my personal experience being in the industry

  16. Which doesn't matter. Amish paste are better than san marzano in flavor anyways. I've planted the varieties side by side. I'll take my grown in ground fresh san marzano tomatoes over a can any day anyways. There are differences in the various canned varieties, but not enough that the vast majority of people will notice.

  17. As someone who doesn't know much about cooking why do so many brands want you to think they're san marzanos? Is it just thats the popular brand or is there something inherently good with that variety of tomatoes?
