Italy is truly the land of vines producingย  an astonishing quantity of native grapeย ย  varieties. One of the most popular reds isย  of course Montepulciano, which thrives inย ย  the mountainous region of Abruzzo, alongside otherย  indigenous varieties like Trebbiano d’Abruzzo andย ย

Pecorino. Today, we’re going to learn all aboutย  what makes Abruzzo wine so interesting and foodiesย ย  are going to want to stick around to the end toย  hear about the region’s incredible gastronomy. Thanks for joining me. My name is Jacky Blisson.ย  I am a Master of Wine and I love teaching peopleย ย

About cool wine regions all around the world.ย  Abruzzo is located in central Italy due eastย ย  of Rome. The region stretches between the Appenineย  mountains and the Adriatic Coast. The region has aย ย  fascinating history but for me the real excitementย  is happening now. Over the past 30 years qualityย ย

Has really skyrocketed with lots of smallerย  independent terroir driven producers cropping up,ย ย  the larger cooperatives really upping theirย  game, and a real focus on sustainable wineย ย  making. Abruzzo has the seventh largest vineyardย  acreage in Italy, with just under 35,000 hectaresย ย

Of vines. Over half of this is red and rosรฉ wines,ย  about 40% of production is of dry white wine andย ย  small amounts of sparkling and dessert wine areย  also produced here. The vineyards grow in quiteย ย  a diverse and dramatic landscape. Two-thirds ofย  Abruzzo’s territory is mountainous. Abbruzo’sย ย

Grand Sasso Massif includes the area’s highestย  peak, the Corno Grande. As you approach theย ย  Adriatic Sea, the landscape gradually flattens toย  gentle rolling hills. Wine is produced in all fourย ย  of Abruzzo’s provinces. Chieti, in the southeastย  is by far the largest. The vineyard terrain hereย ย

Is quite flat, the soils are really rich in clayย  and fertile, and the wines tend to be more roundย ย  and supple. Heading northward up the coast theย  vineyards of Pescara and Teramo tend to be plantedย ย  on the hillsides on clay limestone soils.ย  The wines are often firmer, more structured,ย ย

And more age-worthy. Finally, L’Aquila isย  Abruzzo’s mountainous interior province. Thisย ย  is really the historic area for wine making but isย  quite small today. The wines are higher in acid,ย ย  firmer, and more mineral. A regional specialty isย  a dry rosato called Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo. Abruzzo’sย ย

Climate is quite mild, especially in the coastalย  areas. During the growing season, the days areย ย  very hot very sunny but the evenings are coolerย  due to coastal breezes and cold air coming downย ย  from the mountains. This is important becauseย  it slows down ripening and allows for great acidย ย

Retention in the wines. As of 2023, Abruzzoย  has just one catchall regional designation,ย ย  the IGT Terre d’Abruzzo. It also has seven DOCsย  and two top tier DOCGs. The most significantย ย  of the DOCs is Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, anย  appellation that is almost entirely dedicatedย ย

To the Montepulciano grape. This grape must makeย  up at least 85% of the blend. On a side note,ย ย  the grape has nothing to do with the Tuscanย  appellation of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.ย ย  Montepulciano is a late ripening thick skin grapeย  it tends to give wines with bright red and blackย ย

Fruit notes, sometimes earthy, savoury undertonesย  and a hint of tar. If you’re looking for a finerย ย  expression from a DOC wine you can look for termsย  like Superiore or Riserva the grapes for theseย ย  wines must come from four top subzones. There areย  higher requirements in terms of grape ripeness andย ย

Longer aging periods are required. The longestย  aging period is for the Riserva tier wines.ย ย  The Montepulciano grape is also used for a rosรฉย  dedicated appellation called Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo.ย ย  These dry rosato wines are incredibly vibrantย  with interesting notes of cinnamon, citrus peel,ย ย

Red fruit, They tend to have a bitter hint andย  they’re very refreshing and food friendly. For me,ย ย  the very best drink almost more like a very lightย  red wine than a rosรฉ. Trebbiano is the main whiteย ย  wine DOC and just like its red counterpointย  at least 85% of the wine must be Trebbianoย ย

D’Abruzzo or Trebbiano Toscana. So, as you mayย  have guessed Trebbiano is not a single grapeย ย  variety but actually a group of grape varietiesย  that share similar characteristics and accordingย ย  to many experts Trebbiano d’Abruzzo is the bestย  of the bunch! Trebbiano d’Abruzzo wines canย ย

Range from very simple, unoaked, crisp quaffingย  wines to richer, more textural wines often withย ย  extended lees aging. They tend to have notes ofย  apple, pear, bitter almond and a really lively,ย ย  rounded palate. Another DOC that spans theย  Abruzzo territory is simply called Abruzzo.ย ย

It is most commonly used for Abruzzo’s otherย  white indigenous grape varieties like Pecorino,ย ย  Passerina, Cococciola, and Montonico. Pecorinoย  is experiencing a real renaissance at the moment.ย ย  This is quite an ancient grape variety forย  the region that was really rediscovered inย ย

The 1980s. Pecorino wines can be quite citrusyย  and tropical but they tend to have a herbal,ย ย  mineral undertone on the palate .Theyย  can be quite firm and the best, for me,ย ย  have a lingering salinity which isย  amazing. To wrap up our tour of Abruzzoย ย

Appellations there are three smaller onesย  in Chieti, there’s Ortona and Villamagna,ย ย  and in Teramo there’s Controguerra. These areย  really site specific, quite small appellationsย ย  that are really gaining a niche following. Abbruzoย  produces fantastic wines but also food. The regionย ย

Has protected origins for its olive oil, is famedย  for its lentils, its truffles, its artichokes,ย ย  it’s cherries, it’s artisanal pasta made fromย  fresh mountain water, it’s array of cheeses,ย ย  it’s lamb and of course as a coastal area, it’sย  abundance of fish and seafood. The food sceneย ย

Is incredible and a perfect match for theย  local wines. For some great recipes to tryย ย  with the different wine styles check the linksย  in the description. Until next time, salute!
