These are my tips and tricks for food photography. For me, food photography is the hardest form of photography. Everyone does it. Everyone takes photos of their food. Snapchat and Instagram are full of food photos. However, doing it right is a real challenge. It takes a keen eye, nice looking food, and the ability to style and light a scene on the fly. Moreover, it takes a bit of story-telling ability as food photography isn’t only about the plate in front of you.

My food photography tips and tricks are as follows:
1) Lighting is everything
2) Composition is King
3) Tell the Whole Food Story
4) Sharpness is Key
5) Don’t Over-Edit

One of the biggest challenges to being a travel photographer is that you don’t have use of a studio. Most food photographers would actually set up an entire shoot based around their meal. In travel, you have to deal with what you have and make the most of it. You need to shoot the light you have available, the props that are naturally around you, and the food that is cooked for you. And well, sure, the photos might not come out as incredible and perfect as they might if you shot them in a studio, the images are definitely more real.

This episode of getting the shot was filmed over 2 days in the Emilia Romagna region of Italy. It is one of the world’s best food destinations, and was a great place to test out some of the skills outlined in the video.
