Ingredients
Servings: 8
¼ cup(s) olive oil
2 fresh thyme sprigs
2 fresh parsley sprigs
2 fresh oregano sprigs
2 fresh basil sprigs
1 head of garlic, peeled and minced
1 shallot bulbs, peeled and minced
1 20 ounce can of San Marzano tomatoes
Directions 6 steps | 100 Minutes
Step 1
Measure and prep all the ingredients you will need to make the marinara sauce.
Step 2
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, heat the olive oil until hot. But be careful not to heat the olive oil too much. It should not be searing hot. Next, add these ingredients to the saucepan in the following order: your basil, thyme, parsley and oregano. Then reduce the heat to medium-low. Lightly sauté all ingredients for about 2-3 minutes, but do not fry the herbs. The herbs should stay green while you toast them.
Step 3
Next, remove the herbs and set them aside. Later on, you can use these herbs to garnish your Italian marinara sauce as you wish. At this point, you should add garlic to the oil. The garlic should simmer in the oil for about 1 minute. Then add shallots and simmer for another minute or until the shallots become translucent.
Step 4
Next up, add the entire can of San Marzano tomatoes to the saucepan. Then add ¼ cup of water to help rinse the remaining sauce out of the can and pour it into the saucepan. At this time, adjust the heat to high and stir your marinara sauce occasionally until the sauce begins to simmer. As the simmering becomes more rapid, you can adjust the heat to low and cover. Continue simmering the marinara sauce for 1 ½ hours, stirring occasionally. If the tomatoes you’re using are whole, then empty them into a mixing bowl first to crush by hand. If the tomatoes are already chopped, then just add them to your saucepan as is.
Step 5
If you would like your Italian marinara sauce to be a little smoother, then allow it to cool for 10-15 minutes before using an immersion blender or a blender to blend smooth.
Step 6
Last but not least, enjoy! Now you know how to make marinara sauce. We hope you enjoyed this classic, traditional Italian recipe!
