We don’t know about any of you, but Eva and I sure ate a lot of sugar over the holidays. There was panettone, cassata, pandoro, cantucci… and that’s just the beginning! Maybe, like us, you still have a sweet tooth but are looking for ways to satisfy it without turning to refined sugar.
A lot of traditional, Italian sweets were invented when sugar was a rare luxury. Home cooks had to get creative when sweetening their desserts, and today Eva’s going to show us some of these alternatives with some treats made with NO sugar!

In the spirit of Zia Maria, we are very intentionally not posting a recipe for Pane Schiavuniscu. It must be made by eye! Try it!

A more commonly available alternative is “Saba,” made from grapes instead of figs. While it will obviously change the flavor, it can definitely be used as a substitute: https://amzn.to/3vDkeoH

Happy New Year! We hope these recipes with no added sugar helps to keep the New Year resolutions on track! That being said… what was the MOST delicious dessert you had over the holidays??
We had “S” cookies in Burano (Veneto) Are these the same?
'we are not going to use any sugar but are going to use honey' 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Happy New Year 🎉🎊These past few days watching my portfolio decline is very disheartening. Holding doesn't really profit much, any idea how on how to earn better on the short run?
I remember making sesame cookies at Christmas with my great grandmother when I was a little girl. I remember her arguing with one of the aunts about the correct amount of lard to use. And I remember rolling the dough into different shapes and rolling them in sesame seeds. I haven’t been able to locate her recipe (if she had one). I think they are regina, and I’ve looked at recipes online but I never see them in different shapes. She was Sicilian. Could you confirm that I’m searching for the right cookie?
No added sugar??? First thing you did was add honey!!! HONEY IS SUGAR!!! Sugar is poison!!!
I've grown up with Pan tramvai (simply called pan all'üva in my town, in Piemonte but not far from Milan) but your version strikes me as a bit odd.
There are definitevely recipes with a bit of lard or butter, but never that much, or with so little raisin.
For me the best version is just a simple bread dough (best if with a bit of wholemeal and sourdough), with an outrageous amount of raisins (up to 1 part dough 1 part raisins).
In another local version, the raisins are not kneaded into the dough but it's rolled up like a strudel, also with an incredible amount of raisins, served on the grape harvest festival.
Happy New Year! Can you recommend a good, authentic, Italian extra virgin olive oil available here in the US? I live in Michigan. Help!
I was recently looking for a recipe for hoppin john and found a video with an American grandma who was using her knife the same way as Zia Maria. The professional chef making the video was horrified and her answer was that she'd never cut herself and she didn't plan on doing so any time soon…
Interesting recipes. What sweetener was used in the candied fruit for aunt Maria's dish?
Some very nice dishes, and I really hope we see aunt Maria pop up more often.
No honey? Please, bury me in the beach sand up to my neck! ٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶
I think the only recipe a diabetic could have would be the raisin bread. Beautiful recipes though 🥰
11:36 if lucky enough to find fresh yeast how do you convert active dry yeast grams to fresh yeast grams does anyone know?
Looking at an online calculator it looks to be 1g active to 2 fresh but curious from other cooks pov
The title of your video is inaccurate. None of your recipes are either sugar free or low sugar. Honey and fruit are indeed sugars. They're just not PROCESSED sugars. They are instead naturally occurring sugars and they are also added sugars. And guess what, speaking as a diabetic who has had to learn these things, neither honey nor fruit sugar is any better for you than processed sugar. Your body reacts the same to both. Meaning you would have done just as well to sit down to a plate of Oreo cookies.
True zero sugar means artificial sweeteners like Stevia or Splenda have been used instead of natural occurring or processed sugar.
What is the recipe?
I like how she was so modest like "no I can't make elaborate cookies" and then made the most elaborate cookie🤣🤣🤣
Wait! Mama Rosa's sister is Tia Maria??? You have TWO secret weapons in the kitchen! A cookbook of their recipes must be created immediately. I will preorder several copies.
Bella Zia Maria! It was wonderful to see you guys have such a wonderful moment with her, whipping up the traditional dolci! Eva has such a lovely family, you guys are so lucky.
Eva's basket of grapes is quite good!
Grazie zia Maria❤❤❤
Mastazzoli ! One of the best and most traditional Calabrese cookies! ❤ Thank you for these videos… from a paesana! Lol
Sorry guys but honey is basically sugar.
sugar is sugar is sugar no matter the source
Perfect recipes for the upcoming Lenten season ❤️
The nose ring is 🤮
I learned to cook from my Zia Maria, too. Sadly, mine passed away, nearly 20 years ago. 😢
Zia Maria ❤️ She cooks like my Baba (grandmother)…and subsequently me! I love all your videos, but this one is extra special! New Year's greetings for health and happiness to Zia Maria!
Hi, I would like to inform those watching the video that these "sugar-free" sweets are still full of sugar, because honey is practically all sugar and butter is all fat, so even the title which is clickbait does not mean that in the sweets here the sugar is absent, but it is indeed very present, the only difference is that it does not come from the sugar in the packaging, but from the honey and sugary fruit that are used. So I warn the viewer that desserts prepared in this way are no healthier or sugar-free than desserts prepared using regular sugar.
