Serves 4

750g lean beef mince (5% fat or less)
1 tsp dried oregano
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, crushed
handful of chopped fresh basil,
1 egg, beaten
salt and freshly ground black pepper

for the tomato sauce
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1 tbsp tomato purée
2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes (or use half canned tomatoes, half passata)
½ tsp sweetener

Preheat the grill to hot.

Put the beef, onion, garlic, oregano, egg, most of the chopped basil
and some seasoning in a large bowl and mix well. Divide into 24 equal portions then, using your hands, roll each portion into a ball and spread them out on the grill pan. Grill for 10 minutes or until the meatballs start to brown.

Meanwhile, put all the ingredients for the tomato sauce in a lidded
saucepan, season to taste and bring to the boil over a high heat.
Reduce the heat to low and simmer gently for 10 minutes.

Add the meatballs to the tomato sauce, cover the saucepan and
simmer gently for another 15 minutes or until the meatballs are
cooked through.

Scatter the remaining chopped basil and the basil leaves over the
meatballs and sauce and serve hot with your favourite vegetables.
