Welcome to San Polo estate TEASER, Montalcino, Tuscany – (vines & Bioarchitecture underground cellar); another installment of “On The Road Edition” hosted by Stevie Kim. This is a teaser of the two episodes dedicated to Stevie’s trip to San Polo Estate in Montalcino, Tuscany. In this episode, she meets Riccardo Fratton, director of the estate, who takes her on a tour of the vineyards and the winery. Here Stevie admires the avant-garde sustainable architecture of the wine cellar, which was born from the idea of making an eco-sustainable winery in synergy with the surrounding nature.
Located on the south-eastern slop of the Montalcino hill, at 450 metres above the sea level, the 22-hectare San Polo Estate is a project of Marilisa Allegrini, who bought it in 2007. The area is characterized by a breezy and dry microclimate with strong seasonal and day-night temperature variations. The winery, a fine example of ecologically sustainable architecture, was designed to minimize energy consumption and environmental impact. Indeed, the essence of San Polo is to trace the wines back to the vineyard where the grapes grew, in order to fully express the concept of terroir.
