Welcome to another episode of On The Road Special Edition hosted by Stevie Kim. Today she interviews Marjan Simcic of the Family Simcic Winery, in Brda, Slovenia! (you can also listen in on the Italian Wine Podcast:
Stevie has traveled to Brda take part in the Masterclass “Grand Vertical Tasting of the Finest Rebula Wines”. Since there were plenty of wine producers, influencers, writers and educators present at the event, Stevie was able to sit down with several fascinating characters to get their take on wine and culture in this region!
About today’s winery:
In 1860 Anton Simčič bought a farm in Medana and began vine growing and winemaking. He soon opened an inn and a store in the village and also managed his own wine shop in Vienna. Over the years his sons inherited the business: Nando the store, Pavel the inn and Teodor the winemaking. After the World War II the government nationalized part of their land, the inn and the store. Nando and Pavel emigrated, leaving Teodor and his son Salko. In 1988 Salko`s son Marijan took over the management of the farm. In 1997, in the village of Ceglo near Medana, a new and modern wine cellar was built, thus creating perfect conditions for producing high quality wines. The new logo of the farm was revealed and a new future began. The year 2008 was a milestone for Simčič winery – Marjan, representing the fifth generation of winemakers, since in 1860 Jožef Simčič bought first pieces of Brda land and planted the oldest vineyards, becomes the pillar of the winemaking from all points of view. Marjan`s story, which was told and implemented through his wines in the past 20 years, in the year 2008 was brought to such perfection to present to public the result of his devotion – a new line of top quality wines ” Opoka ” . Along the wines’ structure we can follow the intertwining of long-lasting winemaker’s experience, signature of his character and all the best offered by the Brda terroir. In Brda jargon Opoka means marl of aeolian sediment very poor in organic structure, whereas very rich with mineral salts. Four wines labeled as “Opoka” (Ribolla, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot) represent a completely new dimension in the quality of our wines.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________ Mamma Jumbo Shrimp is a channel dedicated to wine and wine / grape education that works in collaboration with the Italian Wine Podcast; a storytelling project that aires new episodes each day on Soundcloud, iTunes, Spotify, Ximalaya, Stitcher, google podcasts and iheart. Hosts such as wine writer Monty Waldin, Dr. Rebecca Lawrence, Steve Raye, Atillio Scienza and others uncover the unique Italian winemaking tradition in conversation with some of the wine world’s key protagonists. Although we deal with international wines and wine people, the heart of Mamma Jumbo Shrimp and the Italian Wine Podcast is Italy, a country with more native grape varieties within its borders than any other country in the world, and Italian wine and grape diversity is a story worth telling. This channel aims to inform, educate and entertain wine fans through engaging tastings, conversations with producers, experts, and personalities.
