Join Stevie Kim on another “On the Road Edition” (found here and on the Italian Wine Podcast) where she travels to yet another wine destination, today she is in Bolgheri, Tuscany! She has traveled here to visit several wineries, speak to producers, influencers, writers and educators. Above all she came to take part in the famous (and very swanky) annual Bolgheri dinner. She stopped at the Guado Al Melo Winery, owned by Michele Scienza. Steve took a tour with the one and only Professore Attilio Scienza, Michele’s father.

More about Michele Scienza: he personally takes care of the vineyard and the winery in Guado al Melo. He has lived in the world of wine since childhood, becoming passionate about the production aspects. His dream was to be winemaker, like his grandparents, and he has realize it thanks to the support of his family. During and after the technical and scientific studies, he built a certain experience and sensibility on enology, working in the family business and also outside. He made his first grape harvest (as responsible) when he was twenty, in 1990. He has never stopped.

About Bolgheri, Tuscany
Bolgheri became an internationally known wine region following an event in 1974 arranged by Decanter where a 6-year-old Sassicaia won over an assortment of Bordeaux wines. Prior to this, Bolgheri had been relatively anonymous producers of ordinary white wines and rosés.

Due to the particular characteristics of the soil and micro climate sunny, dry and moderately windy, the grape varieties of Bordeaux origin tend to thrive, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

If you want to learn more about the Professore:
The one who checks all the facts and regulates when we mistakenly type “Verdicchio” in place of “Vermentino.” Attilio Scienza is a full professor at the University of Milan in the Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences where he teaches courses on genetic improvements to the vine; he also teaches Viticulture in the Master’s program of the University of Turin in Asti. He has been the lead for many national research projects in the field of physiology, agricultural techniques, and vine genetics. As the author of over 350 publications on vine and viticulture in national and international journals, you can bet he knows his stuff!
