Most of us when we go to a restaurant abroad, we get confused because we do not know how to pronounce the names of most of the dishes. So I thought why not we learn the pronunciation of some famous and tasty dishes.
So here we go….
We are going to learn the pronunciation of some;
Mexican dishes
Italian dishes
French
And some of the common food items which we probably have been pronouncing wrong.
Mexican
1.Churros. Choo-roze
Churros are a popular Mexican dessert that is quite popular in the US.
2.Tortilla: taw-tee-uh
L sound becomes silent .
A tortilla is a thin, flat, circular unleavened flatbread originally made from coarsely ground corn, and now also from wheat flour.
Unleavened means without yeast
3.Quesedilla: Kay-suh-dee-uh
The l sound turns to uh.The l sound is silent here.
A quesadilla is a Mexican dish consisting of a thin dough or tortilla that is filled primarily with cheese, and sometimes meats, spices, and other fillings, and then cooked on a griddle or stove.
4.Enchiladas: en-chuh-laa-duhz
An enchilada is a corn tortilla rolled around a filling and covered with a savory sauce.
5.Burrito : br-ee-tow
A burrito is a dish in Mexican, consisting of a flour tortilla wrapped into a sealed cylindrical shape around various ingredients
The difference between Enchilada and burrito is In Enchilada the tortilla is made with corn and in Burrito the tortilla is made with flour.
Secondly enchilada can be eaten with fork where burrito can be hand held and eaten
6.Tamale: Tuh-maa-lee
It’s a corn bases dough steamed in corn sheath or banana leaf.The wrapping can be discarded or used as a plate.
7.Guacomole ; gwaa-kuh-mow-lee
Guacamole is an avocado-based dip, spread, or salad first developed in Mexico
Italian
8.Bruschetta: Broo-skeh-tah
Bruschetta is a dessert from Italy consisting of grilled bread rubbed with garlic and topped with olive oil and salt. Variations may include toppings of tomato, vegetables, beans, cured meat, or cheese.
9. Bolognese: bow-luh-nayz
Bolognese sauce is a meat-based sauce in Italian cuisine
10.Gnocchi : nyow- kee
Gnocchi are a varied family of dumpling in Italian cuisine. They are made of small lumps of dough composed of semolina, ordinary wheat flour, egg, cheese, potato, breadcrumbs, cornmeal or similar ingredients.
11.lasagna ; luh-zaan-yuh

12.Ratatouille : ra-tuh-too-ee
Ratatouille is a French dish of stewed vegetables,
13.Cognac: Kown-yak
It’s a type of Brandy.
14.Croissant ; Kruh-saant
A croissant is a buttery, flaky, pastry of Austrian origin, but mostly associated with France.
15.Mousse : moos
A mousse is soft prepared food that incorporates air bubbles to give it a light and airy texture.
