We do our best at Alchemix to deliver the most accurate history possible within the murky and hazy realm of cocktail history. By and large, the reason why that is possible is because of the historical writings of David Wondrich, undoubtedly the best Cocktail Historian to ever live and one of the last great Journalists in any field.

At Alchemix, we consider both Punch and Imbibe mandatory reading for high-level bartenders and anybody interested in Cocktail History. Please consider buying the books through our affiliate links below in which we make a small commission. It’s a great way to support the show!

Cynar
1.5oz/45ml

Montenegro
1.5oz/45ml

Ginger Beer
3oz/90ml

Glassware
Highball

The Alchemy,

In a Cocktail Shaker, add Lime Juice, Cynar, and Montenegro. Ice your Tin. Shake Vigorously (Shake Time depends on the size and quality of the Ice). Fine strain into a Highball glass. Add ice. Top with Ginger Beer. Garnish with a Lime Wheel. Serve or Imbibe.

The Lore,
Jamie Boudreau, the owner of Canon Whiskey and Bitters Emporium in Seattle, WA, a multi-award winning bar that includes the likes of ‘Best Spirit Collection’ from Tales of the Cocktail in 2014 & 2017, added this to them the menu in 2015. One year later, it was published in Brad Thomas Parsons’ 2016 ‘Amaro’ book. Canon boasts the largest collection of American Whiskey and largest Spirits collection in the US.

The Philosophy,

A simple Cocktail that became an instant hit. This cocktail is a crowd-pleaser that can easily be made at home. If you don’t have a Cocktail Shaker sitting around, build the cocktail in a Highball glass and give it a quick stir.

The Era,

2016. Modern Cocktail Era.

The Geology,

Canon Whiskey & Bitters Emporium. Seattle, WA.

The Essence,

The light, bright and refreshing nature of Ginger Beer is contradicted by the deep, dark, and rich flavors of the split Amaro base in this Cocktail. Though there is a heavy dose of Amare, this can be enjoyed at any moment and any season.

Alchemix Assessment,

A fine balance of rich and refreshing. On the sweeter side. A nice drink.
