Off the west central coast of Italy lies the island of Sardinia. A hilly and rustic place, this island is known for their herds of sheep and goats, and for the age- defying properties of its darling grape: Cannonau, or A.K.A Grenache. This grape variety was brought to the island during Spanish occupation and has thrived in the rugged landscape of this Mediterranean island. Cannonau is known for its hearty nature but more recently it has received much praise for its elevated levels of anti-oxidants, this variety has easily two or three times artery-scrubbing flavonoids that has health professionals touting the beneficial properties of drinking Cannonau! Of course, all things in moderation.
Keeping in the spirit of health and wellness, Olianas is a wine estate that takes its impact on the Sardinian environment seriously. They have taken Organic viticulture one step further to become the first winery to be entirely BioIntegrale. Cannonau is the choice for pairing with Sardinian lamb and matured sheep cheese. Excellent with pork, pasta with ragu or with mature cheese, this is a versatile wine that is sure to make you feel good on all levels!
90 Points James Suckling
Medium garnet in color, this wine smells of strawberry and herbs. In the mouth, strawberry, wet earth and herbs mix with a minerally brightness. Faint but muscular tannins hand around the edges of the palate.
If you are interested in organically farmed wines, give the Olianas Cannonau a try! I fell in love with this wine at first sip, and I think you might, too.
Here’s to your health!
