Long before Nutella became the smooth, chocolate-hazelnut spread we know and love today, it started as a clever fix during a time of scarcity. In World War II, Italian baker Pietro Ferrero faced soaring cocoa prices. To make the most of his ingredients, he combined a small amount of cocoa with sugar, milk, and hazelnuts, forming firm blocks called โ€œGiandujotโ€ that people sliced onto bread. Kids soon began snacking on the blocks like candy, which inspired Ferrero to transform it into a creamy, spreadable paste known as โ€œSupercrema.โ€ In 1964, it was rebranded as Nutella โ€” and a global breakfast favorite was born.
