Most people can name five Italian wine regions without blinking. Ask them about Albanian wine and you’ll get a blank stare. That’s exactly why you should be paying attention.

Albania has four distinct wine regions, indigenous grape varieties that exist nowhere else on earth, and winemakers who trained in Tuscany before coming home to do something far more interesting. You’ve got Kallmet from the sandy hills near Lezhรซ, bold and dark with serious grip. Vlosh from the Berat valley, floral and dry in a way that stops you mid-sip. And Shesh i Zi, a black grape from around Durrรซs that locals have been quietly obsessing over for generations.

Oh, and there’s a winery aging its bottles inside two converted communist bunkers. Underground. Stone walls. Actual great wine coming out of a Cold War relic.

This is what Albania’s wine map looks like. We’re just getting started.
