We’re continuing building our off-grid paradise homestead in Italy. This week we’re back to terracing (yay) and a big clearing of our abandoned land ๐. We’re planting new trees, building our permaculture food forest & clearing old abandoned trees.
Living off the grid in rural Italy means doing everything ourselves โ the planning, the building & the problem-solving. This is the reality of off-grid life and restoring abandoned land from nothing.

In the UK and Europe I have seen people use hazel for many things, the most common is making a "wattle" fence using all parts of the hazel. Posts, branches are apparently quite strong and sturdy.
To help when starting a new bed. You donโt have to remove the grass. Lay down cardboard and put wood mulch on top. Just have a hole for your tree or other plants but the cardboard will kill the grass.

Hello you two. Hazelnut bushes grow everywhere here (Ontario Canada). We find the squirrels and chipmunks get to them pretty quickly and the ones they miss are quite small. A hard pruning canโt be a bad thing, perhaps less competition from other shrubs, bushes etc will help it thrive. Your videos have a quirky touch which is entertaining.

Beautiful terrace work as always! I wonder if the hazelnut shoots can be coppaced for nice straight pieces of wood for fences, etc.

Incredible how the land changed to it's positive since you put so much work in it!
For the haselnut i can just say that you probably have to cut down all the older parts of it to rejuvenate it. Over the time, if it's getting too old, it produces less nuts. A hard prune will change it โค
The hazelnut tree looks coppiceable for straight wood sticks if the nuts are no good and it's not infectious ?

Hope you save the elder trees. We had 5 trees at home and used to make flower and berry cordials as well as flower and berry wine. (both wines are great btw, try it). Berry cordial is great for colds and flu type symptoms. Stamps on symptoms fast.
Empty hazelnuts is sometimes related to drought. They love waterlogged clay soil. That bank looks as if it can dry out pretty fast in summer. As said previously, hazel makes great fencing. Solid round wands for the uprights and split or round wands for the lattice. Better looking than bamboo. Link to hazel wattle fencing below.
