Clementina, San Francisco’s first entirely gluten-free Italian restaurant, opened in the Inner Richmond last week.
The new neighborhood spot is a labor of love from couple Viviana Devoto and Gianluca Legrottaglie of trattoria and wine bar Montesacro, who began experimenting with gluten-free alternatives when their youngest daughter was diagnosed with celiac disease. Legrottaglie is known for introducing a cloud-like Roman-style pizza to the U.S. 11 years ago, when he opened Montesacro in SoMa. It took countless iterations to develop a proprietary gluten-free flour blend with the right chew and crust texture.
What started as a pop-up in the Marina has officially transformed into a full-service restaurant aimed at both diners with celiac disease and those without it. Italian food lovers can expect a wide array of seasonal dishes, from a pizza topped with lamb sausage, mozzarella, potato, garlic and rosemary to pasta dishes such as squid tagliatella and bone marrow risotto.
