While everyone else is getting ready for Milan Fashion Week, I’m reminiscing about my first trip to Italy to experience the Truffle Festival in Alba.
Love ‘em or hate ‘em, truffles have become a symbol of elite culinary gastronomic luxury. Blame the marketing mastermind Giacomo Morra, who made the white truffle a global icon by gifting giant knobbly “diamonds” to celebs and launching the Alba fair nearly a century ago. Marilyn, Churchill, Hitchcock—the PR was genius.
Today it’s still theater: Lagotto Romagnolo dogs (the truffle pros) nose out the goods, and the World Auction sees monster knuckles go for wild sums—recent lots hit six figures; typical market prices swing by size and season.
Nerdy nibble for you:
– Peak season: late Sept–Dec, with the Alba Fair running Oct–Nov.
– It’s full name is the Tuber Magnatum Pico—uncultivable, hyper-aromatic, shaved raw.
💬 Where should I truffle next—Barolo brunch or some Piedmont pasta?
