My first meal out on this trip to Italy was at a beachside cafe in Ladispoli where the ocean was so close and I saw a black sand beach for the first time. The fried fish was flavorful and the carbonara creamy. I stumbled through my first Italian expressions in more than a decade, grateful for the young woman who spoke English through a smile.
