Pizza was considered food for the poor and nobody with money wanted it. See, back in the 18th century, pizza in Naples looked nothing like we all know it today. It was just flatbread with cheap ingredients like garlic and tomatoes. Street vendors sold it to workingclass people who needed something quick and filling to eat. But everything changed when Italy’s Queen Margarita visited Naples. She went to the Italian chef Raphaela Espazito to try his pizza. and he made a pizza with tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil to symbolize the newly Italian flag. She loved it so much that the pizza was named after her, Pizza Margarita. And that’s why.
