We are told when in Rome, do as the Romans do… so here I am in the Emirates lounge at Rome Fumicino airport and rather than sipping Champagne I have an Italian Metodo Classico sparkling-wine in my glass, specifically Ferrari’s Maximum Blanc de Blancs Trentodoc N.V.
Ferrari are an award-winning sparkling wine producer from Trentino in northern Italy. They produce Metodo Classico wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir under the Trentodoc appellation.
The company was founded in 1902 by Giulio Ferrari, who wanted to make wines that equalled the wines of Champagne. In doing so, Ferrari became one of the first Italian producers to make large-scale plantings of Chardonnay. Giulio Ferrari had no heirs, so in the 1950s, the company was passed on to Bruno Lunelli, the owner of a Trento wine shop. Over the next couple of decades, Lunelli grew production from 9000 bottles a year to 100,000. The third generation of the Lunelli family runs the business today.
Ferrari currently work with around 500 vine growing families in the mountains of Trentino, as well as farming some of its own vineyards. Their wines are produced in Italy’s largest sparkling wine facility, which cellars millions of bottles in extensive underground cellars.
