Verona, a beautiful historic city wrapped by Adige River and small hills with history, plazas, shopping, food, easy transportation and intriguing stories. Yes, Verona is one of our favorites!
The historic area of the city is on a peninsula with five small bridges crossing the Adige River. We walked the bridges and connecting pedestrian walks on both sides of the river, enjoying parks, plazas, churches, castle, cathedral, and the Roman amphitheater.
Roman remains appear in nearly every block of the historic area.
The amphitheater, built in 30 AD, is the third largest standing amphitheater today, and is still in use for performances with seating for 15,000. We were told it will be the site of the closing Italian Winter Olympics in 2026.
We were surprised how compact and varied the historic area is, easily walking from end to end in two hours. Of course, leisurely walks could take all day if you stop to see everything.
Al fresco dining is very common, very good and worth every bite. We always smiled when passing long grocery aisles full of pasta, reminding us of our location.
Romeo and Juliet was set in Verona during the 1500’s, a trade city with powerful business families. Scholars are not convinced Shakespeare, and Englishman, travelled to Verona. Still, Romeo and Juliet is a classic love story in a wonderful setting. Gazing up at Juliet’s balcony from the courtyard brings a smile. Putting you hand on Juliet’s breast brings good luck.
