Recently, Eva and I headed by boat to the mysterious island of Sardinia. The main reason for the trip was seeing something truly unique: the Mamuthones of Mamoiada, an ancient ritual that still takes place once a year and is unlike anything else in Italy.

We won’t explain exactly what the ritual is before you see it for yourself, but we can say this: it’s intense, mysterious, and very real. Being there felt less like watching a performance and more like stepping into something that’s been happening the same way for a very long time. Because it has been.

If you’re curious to explore a lesser-known region and see a side of Italy few get to witness, this one’s for you.

  1. Dear Harper and Ava, you are doing the work of the Goddess here!!!! Oh my goodness what I wouldn't give to to be there eating at that lovely food and meeting those wonderful people! Thank You from the bottom of my heart! 💜🫂💜

  2. Yes this is how we have Easter in Greece this was Estrus the worship of Artemis in the spring for the bounty that the season will bring .

  3. As far as request requests, just want to see more about the food on that trip, saying it’s the best pork you’ve ever had and leaving it at that is a bit of a teaser. How do they make it, lol? Pasta, too, and all the cheeses. A deeper dive into the food production would be nice. very interesting though culturally.

  4. We done again Harper! Beautifully produced and edited…living the good food/history/ culture combinations.Greetings from central Portugal

  5. I know you’re not in the exact area but how are things going in Sicily. I’ve heard from a cousin that the landslides are overwhelming.

  6. I love that from yule logs, to sacred days, to fires, to feasts that the bronze and probably stone age lives on.

  7. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. It actually brought tears to my eyes. These ancient indigenous rituals and ceremonies and dances and music are so full of our greater humanity, embodying the wholistic view that pre industrial peoples had of their worlds. It makes my heart ache for these things in my own life. I might have to come and see for myself. Thanks again!

  8. I really needed to see this with all the crazy things going on over here. This is a very beautiful welcome bit of video you guys have made for us.

  9. Willing to bet that this was the original Christian church. It's way cooler than the commercialized stuff they have going today.

  10. 🤯WOW!! That was absolutely mind blowing! Eva & Harper, Love you & your channel so much!❤❤ You take us on very intriguing, interesting adventures! Blessings to you and your families! **I just ordered from Holzkern using your code! What beautiful offerings there! Thank you!

  11. I love your videos on cooking and culture. I have to say, it seems remiss to not state the obvious here, that this very old tradition is problematic with the use of Blackface. How would a Black family feel being in attendance here? I would be uncomfortable myself, as would my kids. I don't think there is anything wrong with stating how the Black, "scary" faces are unfortunately used to represent the threats to the community's well being, and how the use of masks of Black faces by an entirely whyte group while Sardinia on the whole has a fair amount of Senegalese/West African and North African people. Avoiding the obvious maintains and protects the racist ideals. Even in our own cultures and especially in our own cultures we need to dicuss the reality.

  12. Visto che il vostro amico cameriere ha sempre una maschera di Boes in mano, adesso vi tocca tornare in Sardegna, andare al carnevale di Ottana e farci vedere i Boes e Merdules.
    Siete moralmente obbligati

  13. You can find this tradition with sheep skin dresses and bells all over Europe, from Germany to Greece, even in Northeastern Turkey (Pontos).

  14. I really enjoyed your video about Sardinia. It seems to be a great place. I love old traditions and dive in deep in history and culture as much as I can. It happened, fortunately, that I watched a video on yt just couple of days before about the Nuraghen. Maybe you will be interested in It, too? Its on the yt channel of the french-german tv station "arte".
