Pizza wasn’t always the world’s favorite food, it was once believed to be poisonous. In the 1700s, wealthy Europeans thought tomatoes were toxic because the lead from their pewter plates would mix with the tomato’s acidity, making people sick. For centuries, pizza was only eaten by poor peasants in Naples. But in 1889, Queen Margherita of Italy tried a simple pizza topped with tomato, mozzarella, and basil, and loved it. That one meal made pizza famous and inspired the legendary Margherita pizza we know today.
