In 2015, Domino’s Pizza tried to conquer Italy, the birthplace of pizza, with an ambitious plan to open 880 stores by 2030. The goal was to dominate the market with fast delivery and locally-sourced ingredients like Prosciutto di Parma and buffalo mozzarella. But there was a brutal problem: they borrowed heavily and racked up over $10 million in debt. Then COVID hit, and local Italian pizzerias started offering delivery through apps like Deliveroo and Just Eat, destroying Domino’s only competitive advantage. So, after just seven years, all 29 locations closed and the company filed for bankruptcy.
