  1. As an American with a British SO who hasn't been to America in 20 some years, but are still obsessed with Americana, we gone to Tokyo Disneyland then Red Lobster last year, which is interesting because it has the American menu but also a much more expensive Japan specific menu, then this year Tokyo DisneySea which we followed up with Denny's has basically a purely Japan menu. These of course were the endnotes of month long slow train trips though rural Japan, not the entire thing.

  2. I love the breadsticks just because at my first full-time job, someone in the upper offices would get Olive Garden all the time and leave like 3 full bags of them in the break room. I was straight out of college so this was sometimes my only lunch.

  3. Every time I watch one of your videos, Phil, I leave more certain that random interest are part of what makes a "Phil"! Warm regards, Felipe 🫂

  4. The breadsticks aren't that good but put garlic butter on carbs, and I will eat as many of them as you put in front of me.

  5. 7:20 when you check out on the Ziosk at Olive Garden now, they even have a survey question “did your server offer you a refill on soup, salad, and/or breadsticks?”

  6. 10:04 I remember back in the 90s really liking Olive Garden. We really loved their breadsticks. Then sometime later, they changed how they did them or something, and they just weren't as good. I haven't been to an Olive Garden in probably 20 years.

  7. lol im glad you got to go to olive garden

    still never have been

    been alive 27 years

not sure how this is possible?? please help me, phil.

    regards,

  8. I used to do the refrigeration work at darden restaurants a little over ten years ago. Gotta say I never had an olive garden I enjoyed eating at. The pasta was always so rubbery. However, They used to give me those cheddar bay biscuits at red lobster and I always ate them happily.

  9. You talked about going to an Olive Garden and showing your plate and how yummy it was.

As far as I can tell, that was the chicken alfredo, which, according to their own nutritional information contains approximately 450 calories over 50% of which are from fat.
Of course, it's yummy. People love fat and salt.
But will it be good for you in the long run? Will it be good for your children?

Look at their nutritional page. They are selling you cheap foods at inflated prices that are bad for you.

  10. I think the most iconic thing about Darden was that he refused to segregate his restaurants. That alone makes him someone worthy of appreciation.

  11. OG breadsticks are bland at best. Salad is quite good. Food is better than average. Wait staff are well trained. Things have improved over 20 years. THE PURPOSE IF A RESTAURANT IS to serve food people enjoy, NOT TO ENSURE SHAREHOLDERS GET PAID.

Corporate crap eventually ruins every restaurant I prefer local restaurants not because they're local mom & pop places, but because their food ACTUALLY TASTES BETTER.

  12. Just watched a video on distributions and how outliers that are successful carry the graphs in all sorts of different sectors.

Olive Garden is that successful outlier that paid for the failures (and had profits to spare…)

  13. I'm so glad i was raised Actually Italian-American. I'm not certain I've ever been in an olive garden, or a red lobster, in my life.

  14. 11:35 i thought this was a fake ending bc you didnt talk about much yet but then i realized it actually is the end of the video 😂

  15. Wait, The Good Earth was General Mills corporate owned?! 🤯 the Cupertino location was a favorite with some Apple employees.

    My MIL loved Olive Garden.

  16. I found your "retro ads" gave me the same feeling as being interuppted by a real ad. Great content with annoying ads is my take away from this video. I subscribed anyway, hopefully you don't do this on all your videos.

  17. I literally didn’t care about the topic but came for the storytelling and the visual style. Did not disappoint

  18. The breadsticks aren't as good as they used to be. It was my birthday restaurant, and I still try to go every birthday, though it usually doesn't work out. In any case, that is just to say that it isn't just failed memory of the sticks, but that they are in fact different, in my opinion. But the rest of the meal and experience (excepting the Ziosk) is great, and my daughter agrees!

  19. Wow, I honestly didn't know that Kermit and the Muppet Movie was onto something with the threat of Frog Leg restaurants!

  20. Fantastic video Phil. Love the effort put into those retro ads. Predictable as always to see that it was investment bros who came in with the idea of removing the endless breadsticks in the name of penny wise pound foolish corporate optimization.

  21. The chain-ish restaurant I miss from the late 90s is Garfield's that fried brownie sundae was amazing. And Steak & Ale. They were the place to go for prime rib & good salad bar, not just pre-made house salad. With baked potato side & they had great bread.
