Welcome back to Our Italian Dream House.
This week we finally tackle one of the biggest jobs at our old farmhouse.
We start by clearing out the historic hay loft which has been untouched for decades. Fifty-one full sacks of hay later, the space is finally empty and ready for its next chapter.
With the loft cleared, it is time for our first ever concrete pour from a truck. The cement truck arrives along with a pump, and we learn in real time how to prepare the area, guide the pour, and get the surface level. It is a huge moment for the renovation and a major step forward in bringing this part of the house back to life.
To finish the week, we take a well deserved break and Ed rides our eBike to the nearby village of Barbaresco. We explore the streets, enjoy the views, and drink a glass of Langhe red wine.

I live at Dallas, Texas. Last week I disturbed a hornets nest and was swarmed by hundreds ! Ours are Southern Yellow Jackets, similar to yours. 15 stings and a visit to hospital. Luckily not allergic but ouch for a couple days with ice then the itching starts. Carry on….
But the pour is uneven…sorry…just kidding…and you basically dared me to say it…;).
Can't wait to see what you make of the hayloft. Wonderful first step. As always, thanks for sharing…
So much potential for that space – looking forward to see what you make ot it!!
My gosh, those hornets were enormous. Good thing you got them out of there. You're right–that loft will be a great space.
that "thing", a mummified animal, is quite possibly an extraterrestrial being ๐
You took a big risk spraying DDT against those huge wasps without protection, fortunately everything went well. I hope they assured you that the concrete pour will be sufficient to prevent any infiltration. In any case, excellent work.

Who's your biggest fan??
OH MY GOSH…what a JOB, you guys!!! That was brutal, clearing out that old hay. And SO MUCH of it!!! But once again: THE VIEW (especially from up there!)!!! Excited to see what you have planned for the space. And WE think that was a RAT you found! ๐ Kudos once again, and your new bike is awesome! ๐ฅฐ
They are called "hornets" but in reality it is more appropriate to call them 'wasps', they are giant Japanese wasps and obviously they are not native but are an invasive species that arrived from Asia.
There is an abundance of space up there, and making it a dining lounge is epic! โค
I believe it will look great and be a nice spot to hang out, eat, and enjoy time with others.

Great potential for the loft space!! People don't forget to hype!!
The floor looks great, the self levelling layer over the top will be perfect. We now live in Lombardy and were recently over your way at the Bra Cheese Festival and had a great coffee at parallels cafรฉ. We guess you know it. You guys seem well settled in Italy…good on you. M&R
Great job! Looking forward to seeing the final result ๐๐๐
IM GUESSING A MARTEN!
Tip: Wear bright clothing when you go cycling – you disappear against the black tarmac with your dark clothes
