Putting this here for the next person who wants to comment “Italy is the worst place you could have gone, it’s literally full of gluten”.. Italy has one of the highest percentages of celiacs in the world! It is full of gluten free options and some would argue it’s one of the best places to travel as a celiac. Everyone knows what celiac disease is and most restaurants do have gluten free food, the issue here is the waiters when dealing with allergens. Some (not all) can be dismissive and a bit rude, and it can often confusing when trying to understand meal options and cross contamination.
What the hell is a "serious" coeliac, give that we all respond badly to even a microscopic crumb?! Do they mean people who can't even eat GF oats because a protein in them is so similar to gluten and their body triggers with that too? Or are they confusing coeliac with anaphylactic allergies?
Bu the way, on your travels and maybe using different languages, have you found that saying 'I AM a coeliac" is considered weird in another language, rather than "I HAVE coeliac disease? I know my immediate instinct in German is to tailor "Zöliakie" so I can say "Ich bin eine Zöliakierin" instead of "Ich habe Zöliakie", but my Austrian friend said they just say it as "I have" rather than "I am".
Not celiac but i had an experience at a restaurant once where i asked them if a dish had carrot because im deathly allergic, they said no, so i got that dish, only to find out it did have carrot. Some restaurants need to be better and actually know whats in their food
Id honestly rather people just tell me they cant manage allergies and let me actually find something i actually eat rather than being treated like im being a bother, but if i say i had a bad experiance we're just expected to absorb bad behavior around our safety, even when someone ends up hospitalized after an experiance. (Im not celiac, just have severe migraines as a reaction to some ingredients and have loved-ones with severe allergies, so i get so fustrated at shit like this!)
Italian citizens who have celiac actually get some money from the government each month to pay for the increased price of gluten free food, which might be why they say it's great for celiacs over there.
Just ask to make sure there's chicken in it, up to them whether it's included or an add-on and if it's refused then order a boiled egg on the side "for your protein requirements". Good chance they'll prefer to add chicken for you rather than boil a whole new pot of water to boil a single egg for you.
I'm allergic to milk protein (not lactose); the amount of times in Italy I had the whole conversation, we reached an understanding, the waiter brought the pasta….. covered in pecorino 😅 The best I can suggest to other people with dairy allergies specifically is go to Jewish restaurants that are meat-only!!! Best experience of my life was knowing I could order literally anything off the menu 😊
Im a serious celiac but i love pizza and bread i just take a pain pill and a mixture of stuff that helps marshmallows root pepermint slippery elm to recover from the hell that will ensue ur in italy go for it
People is pissed about "Señora" but the issue is this video is unrealistic and not representative of Italian restaurants…I understand the frustration and I'm sorry if you were treated badly or got scammed in some tourist trap but there's plenty of options, or they would straight up say no
Sorry but if your allergies are that severe you need to eat at home and if you're going to travel, you're doing it at your own risk and risking staying hungry. No one owes you accessibility when your allergy makes it almost impossible to run a food establishment, touch some grass.
While in the actual defense of the person who's making the food is that a lot of people say they're most of the time it's not true celiac disease that is dangerous lot of people have gluten intolerance where they bloat after or they're not at all and they just want to eat the food lol because true Celiac actually test positive and you go through not just through a blood test but through an endoscopy and blah blah blah. People who just don't want to have gluten just doesn't want to have gluten and that is extremely popular nowadays
How many times i have served people with apparently severe allergies like "you know if you mess this up she could die?! ". Eat home then… I dont know what happened in 10 years for people to have so many allergies and food restrictions, thats crazy !
I get this kind of thing all the time in my local restaurants in Australia. The worst thing is so many restaurants will add "gluten free" or "gluten friendly" or "low gluten" or "reduced gluten" indications on their menu but when you have coeliac disease you can't eat any of them because they have a risk of cross-contamination. When you talk to staff they don't know anything about what has gluten or doesn't.
As an Italian celiac, there's way more places that make safe gluten free option that anywhere i've traveled to. Most pizza places i go to for gluten free pizza in Italy have an AIC certification (that stands for italian celiac association or smt), that gives you NO risk of cross contamination. there are usually around 3/4 retsurants per big city who are AIC certificated. So if you're a celiac i suggest you to look for the logo (both on restaurants and on pre-packaged food) or install the app.

"Señora" 😭
This feels very much what it's like to talk to the majority of doctors. XD

thank god I don’t have celiac disease
Gluten allergies are not real.
señora is spanish, signora is italian
I’ve met a lot of international students that can eat bread in their country, but not American bread so it shows there’s levels to this! 😮
Why señora?

Sounds like Americans treat allergies as a liability so you count on restaurant staff to be catious. Whereas in Italy, you have to fend for yourself 😂

The problem is all of these random people who are “gluten free” just because they want to be. It’s made all of us serious gluten freers look fake lol
'Of course, im not an idiot!' [2 seconds later] 'do you want bread with that?'
Frown at them that way they know you’re serious 😂😂😂
Im annoyed and I dont even have celiac wtf
I'm triggered by the fact that you wrote señora. That's Spanish!!! It's*SIGNORA* in Italian . Pronounced see-"knee"oh-ra
How many times i have served people with apparently severe allergies like "you know if you mess this up she could die?! ". Eat home then… I dont know what happened in 10 years for people to have so many allergies and food restrictions, thats crazy !
why is she speaking spanish at moments?
