I check in to two of the most luxurious 5-star hotels in Rome: the legendary Hotel de Russie and the iconic Hotel Hassler. Both are world-famous, but which one actually gives you the best experience? From elegant rooms and rooftop views to service, food, and value — I put them head-to-head to see which truly deserves to be called Rome’s best.
Hotel 1: Hotel de Russie – known for its secret garden and celebrity guests
Hotel 2: Hotel Hassler – perched above the Spanish Steps with panoramic views
Both are in stunning locations, but only one came out on top.
COMMENT below – which hotel would you choose?

Very enjoyable.
Have you been to Hassler, the Imagó restaurant, which boasts two Michelin stars… and ordered simple dishes? Imagó is known for being frequented by politicians, Rome's upper class, actors, presidents, and foreign delegations. You could have tried their tasting menus, among the most renowned in Italy. A missed opportunity. If you come to Rome, eating basic Italian dishes in a five-star hotel is like being ripped off. They offer simple cuisine that caters to the tastes of international tourists, featuring the most famous dishes. Spending over €35 for a simple first course, when 100 meters away you'd pay €12 for the same dish, is foolish. I'm Roman, and I know certain places and environments well. Some places are just tourist traps. You've eaten at De Russie, in the garden, where there's a very popular bar, but the restaurant is frequented mostly by foreigners for dinner, and that should tell you enough. Fifty meters away is Bolognese, a historic restaurant frequented by Berlusconi and former presidents of the Republic. You've missed an opportunity. In some places, you'll never find true, authentic Roman cuisine.
Next time you come to Italy, ask yourself: would an Italian ever eat here? What are the alternatives? And why do I only see foreign tourists for dinner? I understand trying only the hotel I'm staying at, but that's getting ripped off. In front of the hotel is a rooftop restaurant, Hi-Res inside the Hotel Valadier, with top-quality cuisine; behind it is Via Margutta, with other restaurants. If you want to eat well, without spending a fortune—because no Italian would ever spend €35 for a carbonara—get out of the historic center, which has nothing Roman about it left.

Aperol spritz is not wine based. Aperol is a bitter aperitive which become a spritz (carbonated) when you add Prosecco. (Italian champagne).
I met my American wife in Rome 20 years ago. (I'm Swedish). For the first date and dinner (at the Falcone,) we met up at the palm tree on the top of the Spanish steps. Can't miss it can you.
Just what I needed.
Did I just hear an English man pronounce it "BAYSIL"!?? Tim you should be ashamed of yourself

Thank you!
You make it look so easy.
I actually have bought gummy bears from a hotel before because my son went through an obsession. 😅
One of the most magical cities in the world. Lovely video Tim ❤
Give me this over Vegas, Dubai, Singapore, NYC anyday! Wonderful.
Both were very beautiful and seemed very warm & welcoming. Molto Bene!!!
I worked at one time with a German guy who used to be working at the consierge desk at the Hassler in the sixties. The Scandinavian royal families would stay regularly for years at the hotel and King Frederik, Queen Margrethe's father, would spend the morning sitting in the arm chair between the lifts people watching and chatting with the staff. King Gustaf of Sweden was more reserved. He was an archaeologist and would take a young Queen Margrethe on digs, both in Rome and Egypt.
My parents stayed there too in the sixties and they loved it.
Definitely the best one of the two hotels (clean carpet, or not).
