  1. Retiring in a wine country sounds like a dream — great scenery, food, and lifestyle, often at a fraction of U.S. costs. Do you think the best value is in Europe’s classic regions like Portugal and Spain, or in emerging spots like South America?

  2. Georgia is very appealing. However, although they consider themselves a sovereign nation, Putin thinks they belong to Russia. I wouldn't invest in Georgia for now.

Its probably best to avoid any country that Putin is gunning for. I'm giving Albania and Bulgaria some good thoughts for retirement, but Albania's proximity to Russian allied Serbia is cause for concern and also some countries bordering Bulgaria, that Putin has his eye on.

He's reaching as far west as he can within eastern Europe, hoping to cut off eastern Europe from western Europe. There is difficulty and government corruption EVERYWHERE, so you "pick your poison" I suppose and cast your vote where you have the power. However, despite its incredible beauty and ancient wine culture, I'd definitely stay away from Georgia, unless and until Putin is replaced by someone who is less of a warmongerer.

  3. Moldova and Georgia, may have great wine, risk is all over there you are right you will have plenty of time to sip wine while you try to escape Putin boys.

  4. I can not believe that people choose as criteria a wine drinking. Moldova and Georgia in terms of safety is a question and health care are good only if you g private.

  5. You forgot Bulgaria! The best wine I ever tasted was homemade wine in Bulgaria. If the wine is most important to choose a country for retire??

  6. Quick note: In this video, I mispronounced Alentejo, one of Portugal’s amazing wine regions. In Portuguese, it’s pronounced closer to ‘Ah-len-tay-zho.’ Thanks to those who pointed it out!

  7. Hi! I live in Spain, and now it is getting cooler it's time to switch to red wine. Right now, I am drinking a Mencia from Galicia, but a garnacha from Campo de Borja is what I will be drinking next.

  8. The top five affordable wine countries for retirement , focusing on a combination of excellent wine, low cost of living, beautiful scenery, and attainable residency options.

    1. Uruguay
Wine Focus: Best known for Tannat, a bold red wine.

Key Appeal: Laid-back lifestyle, beautiful beaches, and a unique microclimate influenced by the Atlantic Ocean.

    2. Moldova
Wine Focus: One of Europe's oldest wine-producing regions (over 5,000 years). Home to some of the largest underground wine cellars in the world (Cricova and Mileștii Mici).

Key Appeal: Europe's least expensive wine country and a "best-kept secret."

Affordability: Remarkably low cost of living. Rentals outside the capital can be found for as low as $300 per month [04:16].

Residency: Requires a pension and sufficient income to support yourself (no fixed minimum requirement listed) [04:01].

    3. Portugal
Wine Focus: Over 250 indigenous grape varieties; famous for Port wine from the Douro Valley and bold reds from Alentejo.

Key Appeal: Old-world charm, great healthcare, and distinct regional wines shaped by Atlantic breezes and varied geography.

    5. Georgia (Country)
Wine Focus: The birthplace of wine, with archaeological evidence of production starting 8,000 years ago. Uses the ancient Qvevri (clay vessel) method.

Key Appeal: Oldest wine culture on Earth, breathtaking Caucasus mountain scenery, and warm hospitality.

Affordability: One of the lowest costs of living in Europe. Rentals in smaller wine towns start at $250–$300 per month [12:44].

Residency: Offers a unique one-year stay without any income requirement [12:37].

  9. if your budget is not too tiny, then Germany might be a place to consider. From Frankfurt, there are six world-class wine making regions within a 90 minute drive!
(Franconia, Rheinhessen, Rheingau, Moselle, Pfalz, Nahe). Hardly any other place on earth has this variety.
Living costs outside of major cities are low, and life is pretty easy, due to remnents of German efficiency in numerous areas (healthcare, roads, reasonably reliable government…)

  10. Great video, with well-researched information, thanks!
As per my favorite wine app "Raisin", which focusses on natural wine, all these places have a pretty lively scene, save Moldova, which I guess is being held back by the Russian bear.
I think Argentina would be worth an addition, as would be Bulgaria and Romania. Remember, when in Rome, do as the Romanians do!
