Confusingly, Montepulciano is both the name of a grape variety, an Italian grape variety that is grown particularly in the central region of Italy of Abruzzo where it comes under the name Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.
This is a type of wine. In this case Montepulciano refers to the grape, the Montepulciano that is used to make the wine in Abruzzo, that particular region of Iyaly.
But Montepulciano is also confusingly the name of a Tuscan village that is called Montepulciano and that doesn’t grow the grape Montepulciano but rather grows the typical Sangiovese Tuscan grape.
The typical local grape in Tuscany that is called Sangiovese.
In this case it is grown in the village of Montepulciano and the wine there comes under the famous name Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
So the noble wine coming from the village of Montepulciano that is made from Sangiovese.
How do you pronounce Montepulciano?
Well I’ve said it several times here, Montepulciano.
C, one single C in Italian sounding like CH, you do want to say MontepulCHiano, not Montepulsiano.
And then you do want to insist on the A. MontepulciAAno.
