Is Midwestern food any good? It always seems to sound terrible when you look at the ingredients… We made some of the most popular Midwestern comfort foods and now we’re putting them to the test. Will Alessio’s Italian palate approve of tater tot hot dish, muddy buddies, Watergate salad, gooey butter cake and skyline chili on top of spaghetti?? Or will he be giving the Midwest the Italian hand?

St. Louis native here. You got the gooey butter cake pretty much spot on. The cake is more about the density. Otherwise never understood myself the "gooey". None of the authentic gooey butter cakes I've had were gooey. You want to really freak him out? Make him "toasted" ravioli.
We call it tater-tot casserole in Nebraska
From Illinois here… It’s tater tot casserole. We don’t call it tater tot hot dish… I’m thinking that’s a Minnesota thing. But could be wrong.
Dish #2 as a michigander, I call this tater tot casserole.
In Missouri, it's definitely tater tot casserole. And it makes a FINE turd.
Alessio, you are now an honorary midwesterner 🩷🩷🩷🩷
I think what happened with your Watergate salad is possibly that you didn't get your crushed pineapple drained well enough. Ilet it sit in the colander for a bit and then blot it with a paper towel a bit before dumping it in. It is a standard at every family holiday get together for us. Kansas here, we say we are Midwest and are lumped in by some "offical" documents or people but not all. We automatically say "ope", so I think its a default inclusion.
Very interesting issue, as always informative and fun
Other Midwest foods are apple dumplings, brats, and of course cheese curds(fresh!).
Ya here in Iowa we call that last one Puppy Chow. And to Alessios defense I would have called that one dish with the tater tots a casserole too.
I am from Ohio and I JUMPED AND LAUGHED when he liked the Chili!!! Maybe our Bengals WILL win this year now!!
In Minneapolis its definitely a hot dish
No Midwestern potluck is complete without scotcharoo bars and cheesy potatoes.
Skyline Chili would have 17x more cheese on top.
So what Alessio is saying….is the midwest is like the Italy of the USA! 😀
Here in Michigan we do call it tater tot casserole
Hot dish=north. Casserole = south
If it needs salt its a hot dish.
Nebraska/Iowa we call it tater tot casserole. I've never heard it being called tater tot hot dish. Instead of a birthday cake, my son asks for muddy buddies –he prefers his a bit clumpy. This was fun to watch!
This made my Missouri born and raised heart happy! Its puppy chow and tater tot casserole for me too!
Its called tater tot casserole. I have never heard it called a tater tot hot dish.
Im so happy you are trying these things. But I have never had Watergate salad with whip cream on top. Glad you still like it.
What? Muddy buddies? We call it puppy chow.
were i live in midwest we call it tater tot casserole
From Iowa you could do Pork Tenderloin or Maid Right with corn.
Um… We do prefer the term casserole
Lifelong Wisconsinite. Casserole for sure.
Grew up in Ohio and ate Chili Spaghetti often as a child. You're missing black pepper on top!
What's wrong? … You have too many rules for food and we don't so we just do what tastes good.
Puppy chow is amazing
Try this! If you get full on salad and half your entre gets left behind this is a great easy very tasty solution.
Romaine lettuce, EV olive oil, diced black olives, grated parmesian. Make two full leaves of romaine for each person.
Brush the cup side of the leaf with EVO
Sprinkle chopped black olives over the EVO
Sprinkle parmesian over the entire leaf.
Eat the leaf by hand without cutting it up. Its just more fun that way! LOL
Its so very tasty but not so filling with an entre dish.
After trying it this way, you can add you own favorite herbs or garlic if you wish. Just dont add more salt! The olives and parmesian add just enough salt. BONÈ PETITE!
Only MN calls it hot dish.
Hot dish is only Minnesota. Maybe Wisconsin. In Michigan it's Tater tot casserole!
In Iowa, we call it tater tot casserole. In Minnesota, they call it tater tot hot dish.
Minnesota calls all casseroles hot dishes though.
Another Midwestern food you need to try is the Iowa pork tenderloin. The best places in Iowa (IMHO) to get a great pork tenderloin are Kula's in Walker, IA and Shuey's in Shueyville, IA.
Live in Wisconsin and Illinois we don’t care if it’s called a hot dish or casserole
I'm from Illinois, you should try corn casserole next.
I am dying over the reaction to the Watergate salad! 😂😆🤣
Indiana here and (one hour from Cincinnati), yes, we have the skyline chili but no, we dont like it. Lol. Every time they open a Skyline Chili in my city it closes within 2 years because no one here likes cinnamon in their chili. We LOVE Chili 3-way (we call it 3 way even though it has beans cheese, onions) but we do it with just good old traditional home made chili. No cinnamon for us!
And yes, we absolutely call it tater tots casserole. I've never, in my life, heard it called hot dish. Isn't that a Minnesota term?
Alessio, is me when food.
Casserole
14:20 and we know that bag will be devoured by tomorrow! It will also be served at the next movie or sports game viewing.
Just watched the rest of his reaction! For sure that's true. Puppy chow was great for school snacks or substitute for cupcakes at birthdays for the class. Just had to store them in individual foam cups with cling wrap and rubber bands.
If it’s served hot it’s a “hot dish” if is served cold it’s a “casserole”. Coming from Minnesota
It IS tater tot casserole!!!
Illinois here and it's tater tot casserole!!
