John Jackson, DipWSET a/k/a Attorney Somm explains the wine cellar defender concept and gives an example of one of his personal favorite wine cellar defenders!
Love this video! “Cellar Defenders” is one of my favorite learnings from you. And I have quite a few bottles that fall under this category based on your definition. Though I had a lot of Italian and Argentinian Cellar Defenders early this year, my current favorite Cellar Defenders are the Reservas and Gran Reservas of CVNE, Muga, Beronia, and Hacienda Lopez de Haro. Santé, John!
I never heard o read an easier explanation about what a cellar defender means. And I can understand why these Riojas are your favorite ones. Thank you so very much John!! One minute of information that could have taken half an hour! Santé
I like the Purple Angel and Catena Zapata Nicholas as defenders but I am admittedly looking for less expensive defenders once my current supply is exhausted. This can be an expensive hobby
I love this concept, thanks for presenting it so clearly and articulately. My “hold” bottles probably overlap significantly with your “defender” bottles, and some of my “defender” bottles don’t show up on your radar. That’s budget…but it’s still a valuable concept.

Great information 👍🍷
Great video, but never been a fan of Riojas or maybe I haven't had a good one.
Excellent advice, and I find myself in need of such “cellar defenders”. That being said, I can’t help but notice the parallels with addiction.

My favorite cellar defenders are wines from southern Rhone.

What or who, is the best source to refer to when trying to determine a wines “ideal drinking window” as you called it ?
