King Charles addresses parliament, jokes on culinary ‘corruption’ of Italian cuisine | ABS-CBN News

King Charles on Wednesday (April 9) addressed a joint session of the Italian parliament, the first British monarch to be given this honor, joking about the ‘corruption’ of Italian cuisine in his country.
“It was the Romans who gave Britons the idea of putting a king’s head on coins, so I’m especially grateful to them,” Charles told Italian senators and members of the lower house remembering the ties between Italy and the United Kingdom.
Charles also joked on the reciprocal influence of the two peoples, triggering the hilarity of Italian politicians gathered in the joint session.
“I can only hope you will forgive us for occasionally corrupting your wonderful cuisine”, Charles said.
“We do so, I promise you, with the greatest possible affection.”
The King also underlined the common stories of the two countries and during his speech, with some parts pronounced in Italian, Charles warned the parliament about ongoing crises affecting the world.
“Our younger generations can now see in the news every day on their smartphones and tablets that peace is never to be taken for granted”, he said adding how Britain and Italy stood united in defense of Ukraine.
King Charles’ previous visits as a prince took place in 1985 and 2009, while the last king to cross the threshold of Montecitorio for a speech to the assembled Chambers was King Felipe of Spain last December.
Charles and his wife, Queen Camilla, mark their 20th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, and they will spend the evening at a state banquet hosted by Mattarella at his Quirinale residence.
