To get the most out of your wining and dining experiences in Italy, knowing the differences between the various types of dining establishments will help you to choose which one suits your culinary tastes.

Knowing why you should eat like Italians is to understand the overall reasoning of how they live a healthy lifestyle and why food and dining etiquette are an important part of La Dolce Vita.

These are the fifth and sixth parts of six basic Italian dining etiquette rules:

Etiquette Rule #5. Where Should You Eat in Italy?

(1) Enoteca:

This is more of a wine bar with food provided to complement the wine rather than the wine complementing the food.

(2) Osteria:

This is also a wine bar, except the wine is provided to complement the food it offers.

(3) Pizzeria:

Italy’s most recognisable of all types of restaurants, a clay-oven cooked pizza is best served in the evening.

(4) Ristorante:

The classic type of restaurant that you’ll be familiar with at home.

(5) Rosticceria:

This is where slow-cooked meats are served as pies and sandwiches or roll fillings like the porchetta sandwich.

(6) Trattoria:

This is a family-run restaurant providing home-cooked fresh and seasonal Italian meals.

Finally, being the mindful and healthy-eating nation they are, Italians are careful to ensure that you shouldn’t swim at least three hours after eating to avoid falling ill or getting cramps to avoid drowning.

Etiquette Rule #6. Why You Should Eat Like Italians.

When you step back and look at how Italians approach food and dining, it’s very logical.

Italians cook with fresh, simple and seasonal ingredients.

This way, Italians eat very healthily and intuitively.

Italians eat one main food item at a time but in courses.

The antipasti or starter course will contain foods full of healthy fats and nutrients, such as avocado or vegetables.

The first course is a pasta or risotto, that is, a carbohydrate dish.

The second course is a meat or fish dish full of proteins.

Salad is not an antipasti, that is, a starter dish – it’s a side dish that goes with the second course, to help digestion.

Hunger pangs are kept to a minimum, meaning that snacking between meals is kept to a minimum, resulting in better self-control.

Overall, Italians enjoy their food more; they love cooking at home; plus they drink in moderation.

Summary and Conclusion:

Where to eat in Italy is helpful if you’re going to visit the country or if you’re now staying there for any period of time.

Learning to understand why you should eat like Italians by following a simple and logical set of dining etiquette rules helps to open your eyes to how easy it is to lead a healthy lifestyle.

In fact, you’ll soon understand its simplicity and question why other countries don’t follow suit.

  1. Sorry, but this series could do without the preaching about what is the "right" and "wrong" way to eat. Many of the Italian food "rules" are just traditions that no one questions, not some kind of superior knowledge. It would be better to present the information as "this is how it's done in Italy" in an objective way.
