This is the abandoned farmhouse with land that I bought in rural Italy for a bargain price. My plans for the property restoration and lanscaping of the land are taking a positive step forward. Take a look at the land now that the work has begun and let me know what you think. The two barns and the derelect outbuildings can wait while I plan the outside kitchen and areas to enjoy living outside in all seasons. Plus I explore the Apennines and show you what inland Le Marche looks like.
Welcome to my channel about my big plans to renovate an old abandoned, rustic, farmhouse that I bought for a bargain. Not being able to live in Italy full time means that the Italian lifestyle and dream is one that I am slowing moving towards. I show you why I chose to buy a house in Italy and why I chose the Marche region over places such as Tuscany, Umbria, Abruzzo and Puglia. A blend of renovation, exploration and reality with as much fun as an unfunny middle age (50 year old) man can muster.
Richard. 🍷

The terracing is very nicely done. Beautiful. What a transformation.
Gabion / local stone filled retaining walls – from a welshman watching from afar in Malaysia. Epic transformation.
Please my friend get a combination smoke-carbon monoxide detector for safety sake. Also I don't know the runoff situation on your property but retaining walls and a french drain might be a consideration. Your house is now sitting in a small canyon.
Love the earth works!!
I did the same to my property in Australia, and it's a typical bloke thing wherever you live.
Grab a coffee and stand on it, sit on it, walk over it, marvel at it.
Was doing this for days.
Reckon I'll do the same on your property.
You need drainage on the terraces. A shallow trench filled with coarse crushed stone – a French Drain – at the bottom of each slope would direct rainwater away from the house.
Love the content mate, you're doing awesome, would love to come and help but yeah, I have 2 left hands
Amazing content thank you.🙏
I would go & have a look at some terraced gardens give you some ideas maybe some steps pools trellis etc. really really great episode 👍👍🙏🇬🇧
Richard , you are living the life. The house will be wonderfully. Consider directing the water away from your house- drainit away!!! Best regards from Sweden
Thanks for showing the amazing cycling there is over there, every time I’ve been up Mt Nerone it been cloudy, even in the summer, looks like you had a cracking day.
Next big ride try out the San Bartolo national park, start in Pesaro and do an out and back, it’s a cracker!
Plant grass just to keep everything stable until you get to everything. Best thing we’ve done to keep weeds and erosion at bay while working.
I keep trying but my comment doesn't show??? Even tried to use a reply and still it disappeared?
@threeacresofmarche
Can’t wait to see when it’s all done.
It’s gonna look great! 🍷🍷
I'm so excited for you with these most recent changes. Congrats mate.
I'll try this again.
Wow three acres is a lot of land to work.
I agree with the comment that it looks like a quarry, gravel pit now, only due to the straight lines.
Nothing in nature is straight – look at the mountains or how a river wanders for inspiration.
You asked for opinions – I would have made the lowest level by the house even bigger – yes bigger.
The tiers also would have been wider and had random curves.
To lessen the steepness of the slopes – they would have been wider/deeper – easier to work on since you're not a mountain goat.
Where the tiers end on the lower part of the land – they would curve/flare out – to be more open and welcoming.
Just like the nature inspired curves on the Museum of Civilization in Hull, Quebec, Canada.
It was designed by native architect Douglas Cardinal.
You have the land space – use it. It isn't a farmer's field anymore, so bring the beauty of nature back.
Go in search of other properties with similar terraces so see their layouts – but you need to do something about drainage, keep the soil from moving – go ahead and sow grass seed to hold it back – sow it heavy
looks like they have done a good job Richard, I like it.
What about a scrumptious swimming pool me old darling..
You can do it your way
Swales, berms, and cover crops. Then trees! Retaining walls on farmland is blasphemy.
Great progress, Richard! And you're getting some wonderful advice, I see 🙂 I would just suggest that whatever you plant doesn't block any of your best views. I think a patch of sunflowers, off in the distance near your tree, would be gorgeous. I was scheduled to come to Corinaldo in October but Covid changed my plans to May. I'll be happy to help you then, if I can. Keep dreaming!
That looks like great riding country. I haven't ridden in Marche, but last month I did some climbs that have been in the Giro in Abruzzo and Veneto – also rode to San Marino. We're vaguely thinking of buying a place in Italy and proximity to good cycling is important!

18:25 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Lets go love this
You are so naive about olive trees😂….read some book on how to do it before planting random trees
I’m following you for a while now. We have a look alike project like you, couple of km away from you near Cingoli. We are now in year 4 of reconstruction and the project, (never ending of course, but the phase to have the essential things done) will require another 2 years. We will also shape our ground/farmland in order to design it as much self-organizing as possible.
Being your almost neighbor, I also want strongly recommend you that you cover all area where you don’t want weeds to grow. The ground looks not so fertile, al that clay…., but you will be amazed how fast al your landscaping will be overgrown by herbes you would never imagine to grow there, sometimes taller than you and with trunks 3 cm thick in only a couple of weeks.
Unless you either mow every two weeks at least, or you have sheep or you cover the soil with root cloth your nice clean area will return into a wild bush very soon, even in winter time. Warm regards, Jürgen
If you lay down some pine straw, it will help combat against weed growth. It could also help with erosion. Also, square bales can help with erosion. That's what we do in East Texas.
