About a year and a half ago, we shared the news that we had purchased an old, abandoned restaurant in the middle of nowhere in rural Calabria. It was so exciting! …but then the reality of purchasing and renovating a historic building in southern Italy set in.
In today’s video, we’re sharing the WHOLE story of “The Locanda” and the many trials and tribulations that we’ve faced along the way. We hope our struggles can at least provide some… entertainment.
If you want to catch up on the first installment of “The Locanda Saga,” you can check out the previous video here: https://youtu.be/bqba4YY-tw0?si=jLJs_G-Oq8ksB2Hn

All we can say is THANK YOU for everyone's continued support over the years ๐ It means the world to us and to the community in Dasร ! We all love Italy for its wonderful food, culture and people, but it's a place with its fair share of problems. Thanks to you, in some small way, we might be able to make a difference there โค
What an amazing video! I came here after seeing the Costco tour, which had us in hysterics. My brothers and I are half Sicilian, and I was trying to think what Grandma, who was born in Sicily at the end of the 19th or beginning of the 20th century would have thought of it. I could see her complaining of the cold, and critiquing the cheese and artichokes. Your project has revived the town, and that is beautiful. I live in an old mill town in Connecticut, and the mills have been converted to apartments and condos. Better than tearing them down! A former fire station is a pizzeria. Iโm subscribing, and am going to catch up on videos.

This is recreation community centre
I love how La Laconia has become an important hub of the community. Even more so because itโs Avaโs hometown. I donโt have much money to offer but I would love to by a coffee mug with La Laconia on it. Some restaurant merch would be a great way to help support the costs. I do t have much experience in making merch but Iโd be happy to do some research if youโd like. Or perhaps you have merch and donโt need my help. Either way I would be happy to help in anyway I can.
I find your work to be really meaningful; reviving a community like Dasa, caring for its heritage, it's…beyond noble.
Great work, Harper and Eva! This was wonderful! Aguri!
BTW I just loved the " "someone" " with the headscarf-wearing, winking Eva – that made me laugh.
The part of the video where the American couple scopes abandoned Dasa property is terrifying. Plenty of small mountain towns in Colorado and rural U.S. have become too expensive for locals to live once rich people start buying up available real estate. I pray for the Dasa government that they keep foreign capital investments at a sensible level.
COMMUNITY……how wonderful! So happy this is all going forward, and I'll grab a cookbook and help you out…..BRAVI TUTTI!!
Well done! Impactful in multiple ways. I pray you have success.
in bocca al lupo guys! ๐๐ ๐ง๐ท
What a beautiful story.
Thatโs crazy the mill was working in the 1980โs. I lived there in the eighties.
Small world.
You two are remarkable! This episode had me absolutely in tears, hearing you speak with such passion and conviction about the work youโve been doing and your mission to positively impact Dasรก.
Amazing. What a story you are creating.
Grazie.
Thank you, very enjoyable. Living in a Latin culture is different and wonderful. I owned a B&B in Mexico (I count Mexico as a Latin culture) and it was wonderful in very special ways – cabbies who already knew my address, even if I didn't know them; people who stopped their cars on the street to say hello; the overall friendliness of everyone – people wanted to get to know you and what you are about. So things don't move so fast, so you didn't find half of what you went out shopping for, so you end up helping someone you don't know. So what? Progress is not the end of the world, and eventually it happens anyway – and maybe in a better way than you imagined. I wish both of you – well all of you – the very best. Now, how do I buy that cookbook?
You crazy guys! Open something down there for business are totally suicide decision! ๐ good luck! People gonna complain for 1 $ on top any dish ! Mentality r soooooo different of the rest of the world. Anyway good luck ๐
If anything you can turn the runoff water from the mill into a small water generator, it would be useful to have a clean source of backup energy thats being produced when you aren't actively running the mill a small turbulent flow generator can run off off a relatively small amount of water providing a small but stable amount of power, could be used to power appliances in the mill itself, its small size also may be a perfect fit for the mill. The terrace garden it has unlocks a lot more potential in not only food but an area for festivities and projects, would love to see Dasa become sort of solarpunk yet keep its historical significance and community, exemplifying its oldest structures through conservation and renewable features.
I really loved this video, i wish you all the best of luck in restoring these buildings, i can't imagining all the work that goes into this.
At 13:22 is that Robert Ricardo?
It sounds like you have your own "Under the Tuscan Sun" story! Keep going! You are doing great things!
Takes guts to do this. All the best to all of you…
24:54 ๐ "Caterina, donยดt eat it still. I gotta catch it on the video!"
Awesome ๐
you guys are a light to the world
This is what the millennium will have occur. Groups of people taking care of their villages, rich stepping in to share. Share what? Not just money but Life. Thank you. Found this today. So glad to see that it is occurring. The world is Blessed by our actions that are whole, benevolent. We can do this as humans loving our life on earth. Hooray
I would have picked the tools and done it myself. I imagine that would not fly with the locals.
Fortunately places like Dasร , that have suffered from rural flight in the last decades, become much more desirable to live in with all the possibilities of remote work that exist nowadays. While this might not completely stop emigration to the cities, it will hopefully slow it down โ or even create a sort of "counter movement".
Wow, how lucky you are. Gosh what an experience to have
Consider a 2nd channel for all the construction / improvements.
What you are doing is wonderful and besides the food another reason to keep watching. ๐ป๐ป๐ป๐ป๐ป๐ป

Hello from S. California! That was so very interesting, but also charming and hopeful for your beloved village of Dasa.
So inspiring to watch this video. What a wonderful contribution to the community! It amplified a spirit that clearly has been alive and thriving there for centuries! โค
