Great video Matthew Had my wine epiphany with nebbiolo(Gattinara)in northern Italy I did have truffles at that dinner I may prefer Nebbiolo Langhe to Alba Better value and can be declassified wine Can' t go wrong either way Hope to be at Oct tasting
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I just purchased a Barbera D’Alba 2022 from Producer Bruno Giacosa, at $52. I hope to get those soft tannins that you talk about, although I guess it will have to wait for a few years. I didn’t purchase the Nebbiolo D’Alba from the same vintage and producer at $60, but after watching your video I might have some regrets for not purchasing. Any advice?
I honestly think nobody knows difference between Barolo and Barbaresco, even locals. its better to go by vineyard by vineyard bases.
How was your trip to México? Did you had time to try the wines I recommended? I hope to see a long video of your trip. Cheers
Really nice reactions + words. Thanks Doc. Expressing & sharing Descriptions is the thing in tasting/ learning, Ratings are a different subject. So Nice that you note that other people might differ on personal appeal. Folks do agree on descriptors and disagree on ratings? Improve shared vocabulary. Bad wines teach senses too. Every wine is a gift. Great wines are above rating!? 1971 Conterno "Montfortino"!!! Too great to rate. You are great!
Between all 3 and having been to Piedmont, I'm Barbaresco any day of the week. It's the sweet spot for value (as a general rule, of course) and there's always chance of finding some less known winemaker making gorgeous and affordable stuff which is less likely for Barolo. It's a safer bet than trying to find a baby Barolo nebbiolo.
I had tons of Nebbiolo in Piedmont and hadn’t really tried it before. Langhe Nebbiolo always felt too gentle for me, but now I would appreciate it more. I now have one Langhe Nebbiolo, one Barbaresco, and one Barolo in my rack:
2016 Virna Borgogno Barolo
2019 Cerrino Barbaresco
2018 Pertinace Langhe Nebbiolo
There’s also Ghemme…
Hi Matthew, very nice tasting as always 😊
I just saw the bottle at 2:15 and it reminded me of the visit at the vinery G.D. Vajra less than a month ago – very friendly people there and a great atmosphere! Had a tasting there including some Barolos and also the Langhe Nebbiolo which is much more affordable. For me, there was quite a difference but I think the Langhe Nebbiolo is easy drinking especially in summer and doesn't need too much aging. Have you been to the vinery and what was your experience there?

Great podcast. Very informative as usual.
Hi Matt ! An old Barolo is something to remember . One of the best experiences wine can provide . But barbaresco is by far the easiest to find in better shape and with better prices IMAO. Lol. Cheers !
Every wine geek or connoisseur is going to like Barolo, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo d'Alba and Langhe Nebbiolo.
It seems from I've heard and see the differences between are very slight and nuanced, so the two big Bs are very close and so is Alba and Langhe. Roero is an overlooked appellation, perhaps somewhere in the middle of the two pairs.
Yes, Langhe and d'Alba offer better QPR for most of us, but sadly lack the cachet of the other two, so precious little gets exported beyond Italy.
Cheers and nice introduction to more recent vintages from Piemonte.
Hi Matthew, I have a costa di bussia Barolo riserva 2016 and I am debating if it is ready to open soon or I should be patient and wait a couple of years? I would love to get your insight, cheers! Nic
I have been visiting the Langhe region just last week (for the first time). Very impressive and almost every rock is a UNESCO World Heritage there 😂
Regarding wines it is a bit like a truffle hunt 😉 the prices vary widely from expensive to extremely expensive.
I fancy the wines of Luigi Pira from Serralunga that has Dolcetto, Barbera, Langhe Nebbiolo, Barolo Serralunga and three single vineyards for very attractive prices. Upon tasting his whole lineup at the winery (no reservation, no fee as long as you buy some) you can taste the steps between each of them.
The ultimate bargain of course is Produttori del Barbaresco.
I just got back from a tour of Northern Italy/Southern France and found that there were many producers doing "cru" barolos, which were an amazing way to taste the vast differences in the soils of the region controlled for the wine makers style. I came away with an excellent G.D. Varja Barolo Ravera 2020 that even this young is incredible. Also, saw another commenter note Gattinara; +1 for that as an amazing hidden gem, along with Bramaterra (I visited Travaglini and Colombera + Garella; both are amazing). I would love to see a tasting on Alto Piemonte!
